I haven’t seen any Pool 2 reports lately so I thought I would put one up…I have been on several big Canadian fishing trips this Summer and haven’t had a chance to fish the river since May.

Fished this evening for a few hours and started on my favorite trolling run. This particular trolling run usually holds fish this time of the year and was just a matter of finding where in the run they were. It took me a little time to also figure out the direction, speed, and color they wanted today. They seemed to want a red no. 5 flicker shad trolled downstream about 3.5 mph. Upstream is usually my trolling direction but tonight they wanted it downstream.

Since I was by myself it took a little time to dial it in but when I did it was pretty good for numbers but they were lacking size. Most were between 16″ and 18″ and all Walleyes. I couldn’t find any Walleyes bigger than 18″ tonight. I usually find nice size Saugers in this trolling run but not tonight.

I also spent about an hour casting Rapala DT6 crankbaits to wingdams but couldn’t dial anything in…I only spent about 10 min per WD and moved on. I might have done better if I would have tried livebait.

A beautiful night to be on the river. Flow was about average for this time of the year with most WD’s having at least some flow over them. Boat traffic was also very light.

Anybody else been on the P2 lately??

I’ve been out a few times in the last week. Been slow. Fishing wingdams mostly and done some trolling. Only caught a few walleyes and it’s been while trolling.

I fished saturday through Monday trying to find some kitties. Caught a couple small channels but really wanted a flat head. I hit a dead head going about 20 that was under the water about 6 inches. I have a manual trim motor and had the release lever up just in case I hit something. It kicked my motor up and the cowling hit me in the wrist. Thought I broke my wrist at first but didn’t. Luckily no damage to the motor. Forgot how much I miss fishing the river. My boys and I decided we will he down a lot more next year.

I was out Sturday morning for a few hours with about the same results. Trolling down stream was the ticket.

It has been pretty quiet in here lately… I haven’t been on P2 nearly as much as I’d like but I was able to make it out a week or so ago.

We focused on my favorite wing dams and we had a tough morning. In a few hours we managed a few small channels and sheephead on jigs/crawlers and one walleye on a crank. At least it was a good one!

Was out for a few hours on sunday morning. Found about the same. Few fish on that trolling run. Nothing big. all walleyes. Couple fish on the wingdams fishing crawlers and casting cranks. Did find one crappie hanging out on a tip of a wingdam.

I was out last Saturday and it was slow for us. We just pitched jigs to wingdams and caught a few sheephead and one smallie.

How deep do you guys normally troll? I’ve always wanted to give it a go but haven’t really done it before on the river. Do you use snap weights or lead core or something to get the baits down? Or are you fishing shallow enough that you don’t need it?

I use mostly size 7 shad style baits trolled on a flat line anywhere from 6 to 15 FOW. Keep in mind that 6 FOW changes to 10 rapidly.

No SMB last night but I never tried casting rip rap. I did get one Catfish while trolling though.

I have not gone nearly as much as years past either but was out last weekend for a couple of hours. Fishing was show with only 1 walleye in the 20 inch range did catch a dandy crappie and a 18 inch smallie all on jigs and crawler. Casted some cranks but all that got me was a few big sheep head.

Hopefully will make it out again this weekend.

Thanks for the reports guys. I think I might get down there Saturday at first light and throw top water flies at the rocks and see if anything wants to come out and play.

It’s been way to long since I’ve been down there but last year when fishing got tough we’d pull some spinner rigs. Most days it worked out fairly well pulling in a few big fish.

    Hi Kendall,

I’ve been out for a few quick evening trips on Pool 2 in the past week couple of weeks. I got four walleyes each trip out generally rigging crawlers or leeches on three-way rigs on wing dams. Tuesday I also got some decent sized sheepshead. Yesterday evening I took by daughter and she got a couple of walleyes, the largest at about 21″.

Last Saturday I was on Pool 3 and got checked by the COs who said it was slow for most everyone they had checked. We did gets some decent flatheads working Dubuque rigs off the tips of wing dams. It seem about this time of year, every once in a while the flatheads will grab the jig. I’m generally using a 1 oz. jig with a 4/0 hook with a 5″ plastic grub. The flatheads were 27″, 32″, and 34″… not big for the flathead guys but a pleasant surprise.

I’ve been fishing the river a lot lately, and i launch at hidden falls, my favorite trolling runs have been SLOW. i was just wondering if anyone has any advice on where to fish in the st paul, lilydale area? No need to give any spots, but a general idea of what to do would be greatly appreciate.

Put a few more fish in the boat Sunday morning. Definitely an upstream troll and they wanted it fast. Water temp jumped up to 81.5 in the main channel.
