Now remember, I’m the guy that likes to wear rubber gloves when touching these things if I have to fish for them.
Ryan King made our first trip out together this last Sunday. We started out between 10:30 and 11:00 am and I was taking off my boots at 3 pm. The goal was to take some video with the Recon 5+ and the Lx-9 to compare the difference mostly between camera heads. Heads Up: I can’t prove this from the video, but after two sessions on the river I believe the “walleyes” are less spooked with the smaller camera head on the Recon 5+ with or without the light on.
I’ll also spoil the video results for you. I can’t tell the difference between the two camera heads once they are under water. I had to use a 3 oz sinker to hold the Recon’s light(er) camera head horizontal and to keep it more vertical from the boat. Remember we’re in a boat and the river has current.
Back to the fishing report. Once I had enough video I asked Ryan if I could fish too. He looked at me a bit funny and said “sure catfish boy”. There were just too many fish down there to pass up trying for them.
Vertical, 1/4 oz white jig head and a purple and green BFish Pulse R. I didn’t have my hook in the water for 5 minutes and I said that feels like a fish bitting!! One chubby 15+ sauger on the board. We didn’t try anything else as those Pulse R’s seem to do the trick. I’m not saying it was fast and furious, but I think we ended up with 7 fish in the time we were out plus a couple three just under 15″. I wasn’t really paying attention to the largest but I can say with some honesty that none of them touch the 18″ mark.
What a fantastic January day. Temp was at 25 degrees, out of the wind and in the sunshine…heck made a new friend to boot!
On a side note we were checked by the new Pool 4 CO for MN. CO Brittny replaced promoted CO Tyler Quandt. I was happy to see a CO on the river when the temp was below 50 degrees. She even waited until we were finished taking photos before coming along side and checking our gear and fish.
Anyway, get out if you can, the fish are there and willing to take a snack. I have a sturgeon through the ice on my mind now and need to find someone with a warm ice house to keep my brat warm in.
Speaking of brats, Ryan boils brats, stuffs them into a thermos and adds boiling hot beef broth. Pulls them out and drops them onto a bun and it’s dinner time. It was awesome!
Here’s the video and a few pictures from yesterday.
