Outhouse maggots

This is a new one for me… The pit of outhouse has about a million maggots down there. We’ve never put any treatment in it and it’s never happened before. I guess I need to check the screening to see how flies are getting in but what should be done about them? Would lime kill them or is there something else to use? I assume I do need to kill them, clouds of flies tickling your butt doesn’t sound fun lol

Good luck keeping flies out of your outhouse, or anywhere for that matter. I would think the maggots would disappear soon after turning to flies.

OMG if a “greatest quotes of IDO” thread is ever started this line needs to be included.

Course salt lightly sprinkled at to keep it on top of the maggot crust. Don’t just pour it in and have the flow of salt break thru the crust of maggots.

Never really noticed them in the box before and haven’t noticed maggots in last few years I’ve had the outhouse. I don’t really know what’s normal, maybe I’ve just missed a batch of them every year because I’m only here every few weeks ???

    Bleach ?

I read this could make chloride gas with what’s in there already. Seems like it would just go up the vent though so maybe chemical warfare is on the table…

    Diesel fuel works.
Doesn’t take much and floats on top.

Just make sure to light up the no smoking sign!

Diesel fuel doesn’t ignite like gasoline, so the spark wouldn’t be a issue. But the diesel is a great idea honestly

To answer your first question, yes lime will kill them It will also help clean the air and digest what’s down there.

Lime is used a lot in outhouses.
Helps break down the solids and cuts the stink.

I know a few guys that keep a bag of it in the house and add some every so often.

Have you ever used barn lime? We do it at deer camp and never had an issue.
