Outboard recoil

I was wondering if anybody knows anything about a recoil rope called Cobra Coil. It claims it’s much stronger than regular recoil rope.

I’m looking for something stronger because I’m sick of fixing the recoil on my outboard.

Why are you always fixing the recoil rope? That should last for years.

Is the gromit that the rope rides in as it comes out of the cowling, or some other part of the recoil, roughing up your rope and causing it to fail?

Good, smooth weave nylon recoil rope should last for years and years.

I don’t see anything rough that’s ruining it. But I broke it 2 of the last 3 times out.

Something is way wrong. It literally should last a decade at minimum. I am thinkng of my own lawn mowers, ice augers, outboard, weed whippers, ATV’s and leaf blowers. I can’t even remember replacing one but my auger is getting close at 20+ years.

I would be looking where it’s rubbing/wearing against another part.

I don’t think I have ever broken a rope. I’ve broken the recoil spring, but not the rope. 2 outta 3? Something is wrong!

Is the rope to short? The rope will break when it stops suddenly.

man,if my outboard broke pull ropes that often,I would have it looked at to see why it starts so hard!! lol

as others have said, either something is cutting/chaffing it,or its too short and they will not last long this way.

after you have replaced the rope, and before you re-install the cover, pull the rope through its full length and watch it to see if ANYTHING is rubbing/chaffing on it,or if it is tracking straight with the entry hole, and the pulley it is wound onto.

a lot of times what I have seen is where the rope comes through the hole that the handle rests on is worn sharp on the inside of that part of the housing.

Starts on 2 or 3 pulls at first then 1 the rest of the day. That’s what is annoying about it.

I’ll have to look into more when it warms up a little.

    Thanks guys

Are you pulling the rope so hard that it reaches the end of its stroke? Does the rope break near the knot? If so, you need to back off a little. Pull shorter strokes.

If you are reaching te end of the rope on a normal pull there is not enough rope on the recoil spool.

Nope, plenty of rope. Broke in the middle of the rope.
