Saw these lovely guys out for a stroll the other night. I love seeing the babies – they’re so fuzzy! Anyone seeing other emerging wildlife as spring progresses? Please share photos!

Ducklett and gooseletts at the Harbor Bar.
Every year it starts out as a big heard, but then starts dwindling. I’m guessing it’s the eagles(?)

May 29, 2020 at 12:56 pm #1945724Ohhhhh, poor ducky. Not really the kind of fun I was intending for this thread.
Brad DimondPosts: 1512May 29, 2020 at 12:58 pm #1945725I live in a first ring suburb of Minneapolis. A couple days back my wife told me to look out of the office window. A hen mallard with eight chicks walked under the window, around the house and past the back door. My Springer lost his mind, glad the storm door is sturdy.

Here ya go lover of birds…..
This guy came to visit just a couple minutes ago.
May 29, 2020 at 4:00 pm #1945794Always thought it interesting how fast those goslings grow. I swear if you sat and stared at one you could almost see it.
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559May 29, 2020 at 5:03 pm #1945809We’ve had a pair of mallards hanging around the yard today too. Haven’t found a nest but they sure act like they are nested here somewhere. Just noticed them today and they don’t seem inclined to leave.
bigpikePosts: 6259May 29, 2020 at 5:16 pm #1945812I get this couple visiting in the spring. They come and go for a few weeks to a month, feeding on last years lily pads and weeds. They are three times larger than a large goose.

Kinda fun and it wasn’t all that bad. Tasted like a cross between great horned owl and blue jay

Those are trumpeter swans, right, bigpike? I didn’t realize they’re that big!

Wait, what?? That can’t be a real photo! He’s looking at the camera… and, well there IS a reflection of a seagull in your sunglasses, but that’s gotta be one of those fun booths that let you digitally hold big fish and stuff. But then you’re wearing a life jacket… I am so confused!
And I need more coffee.
BeastPosts: 1192May 30, 2020 at 9:30 am #1945930Love seeing wildlife, but it’s sad to say the Lake associations have crews going out and oil the eggs so they don’t hatch. they don’t want goose crap on the well kept yards.
May 31, 2020 at 6:00 pm #1946194Love the fawn photos. They’re so wobbly and cute when they’re so young!
I’ve seen several bumblebees, a dragonfly, and a couple of cool looking spiders today.

I grabbed a cold water from the fridge at 9 tonight and went out and sat on the steps looking out over the park and creek behind our house listening to the frogs. What quieting music. Then like magic, fireflies started showing up, flickering their nifty green lights. First one, then three more and before I knew it they were everywhere. First of the season.
June 1, 2020 at 8:59 am #1946312Tom, I LOVE fireflies! I don’t see them much at home, but I love to see them when I’m up north our out in the woods. I many have fond memories of trying to collect them as a kid, not realizing they’re not the prettiest bug. But I love their glow. ♥
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559June 1, 2020 at 9:25 pm #1946527We’ve only seen Scarlet Tanagers here in the spring, but lately we’ve seen one here for two consecutive days. Comes in to the oranges on the Oriole feeder.
Has anyone ever had a psychotic Robin reining terror in their yards before…chasing all the other birds away? We have one that sits right at the Oriole feeders. It drinks there and eats jelly and just throttles any other bird that tries to come in for some goodies. I’m fed up with the dink. Orioles come sit in the neighbor’s tree and if the Robin isn’t around they’ll come in to eat. But if that Robin sees them there at the feeders he puts the chase on them and will actually hit the Orioles in flight. Ma wants to make the Robin cat food and I guess I’ve had enough of the dink too. The sucker even chases woodpeckers off the suet log and suet cakes and these are at the other end of the yard away from the Oriole stuff.

There is nothing more beautiful than a Scarlet Tanager fluttering from limb to limb in the rich morning sunlight.
All time stops and it’s literally mesmerizing.
I’ve only seen a handful of them in my lifetime. Amazing little birds
Tom SawvellInactivePosts: 9559June 1, 2020 at 10:59 pm #1946543A cardinal pales in color compared to the Tanager. That red is absolutely electric and sun amplifies it to a whole other level.
tornadochaserPosts: 756June 2, 2020 at 9:22 am #1946601I have 8 baby rabbits in my rhubarb. My daughters can’t stand not being able to touch them.

Tom we had a robin doing that this spring also. I think it was chasing everyone away because they had a nest nearby. We have recently seen a young robin around with two protective parents. I just wish the young one would find better place to crap then on my chair on the deck. It perches there while waiting for mom or dad to come and feed it.
