I know this is random and yes I know I should just use my snowmobile but has anyone ever built a smitty for the resort size sleds? I fish on a couple lakes where I only have to go 1 to 200 yards out to get on good fishing. Would be nice to have a smitty instead of having to haul my trailer and sled every time. Any ideas? Would snowboards work better for that size sled? What is everyone’s thoughts. Dont be scared to throw any ideas you got out there. Open to everything. Thanks.

I used cross country skis I picked up at a second hand store. The whole thing was around 30 bucks to build. I made mine collapsible using pins so it fit in my truck at the time. If you go on YouTube there are a bunch of videos showing how to make them.

I’ve watched a bunch of videos and know I can build one. I guess I’m wanting to know if anyone has ever built one for that big of sled. Don’t see many as big as the resort. How much weight do you haul with your smitty. The house alone is 130 to 145 pounds. Plus maybe 35 pounds in stuff I take out. So close to 200#.

Mine was made for the resort as well. Mine is just the non side door version. With all of my gear I would guess 200-250 with gas, auger, rods and tackle boxes, Engel bait box, 20lb propane tank, big buddy heater. I reinforced all the corners I could with a 1×2 for some added structure. The sled itself was pushing 20lbs when done. So you are still pulling a lot of weight, it’s just the resistance and drag is a lot less.

I now own a Lodge and Cottage that I use when I have to pull gear. My buddies got smart and got their own stuff, because I always had them do the pulling because I had to supply the shack. I actually just sold my smitty the year on Craigslist. I can handle the smaller ones without the sled. Once the Resort comes out so does the wheeler or snow machine.

If you haven’t already go look at the smitty thread on iceshanty.com: https://www.iceshanty.com/ice_fishing/index.php?PHPSESSID=6bu0iptgcfc8h3k2u377t48sf1&topic=103927.0 Tons of pictures and tips.

I would think that snowboards would provide too much resistance. I think even with the resort you’d be OK with downhill skis. Maybe mounting a third one in the middle.

Anyway, I’d ask over on that forum because those guys are the smitty experts by far and people from all over the country and Canada are on it.
