Instead of the door in the front, having doors on both sides so you are not stepping over your gear.
My non-engineering/design/architecture mind tells me that the reason it is not done that way is… in a 2 man shack, each guy would have their own door on their own side. Open both doors at once and a direct wind through there will take out all the heat that you’ve stored up, and blow anything else out of there. Much like when you open up 2 car doors at the same time and a windy day and everything blows out of your vehicle.
I would love a side door option, by the time you get a vexilar, minnow bucket, fish bucket, rod bucket, tackle, and heater out front there isnt much room left and you have to step over stuff while missing the holes. How would you have a side door with the shack poles though?
I purchased a Frabill Predator Sidestep at the ice fish show this past December for $700.00. I am very happy with it. When I first saw it last year I instantly checked Otter’s website to see if they also made one and to my surprise and disappointment they didn’t. I know that Otter makes the best sleds but to my surprise Frabill really stepped up their quality. If you do purchase one of these make sure you get the Predator and not the Guardian. The Guardian only has 7/8″ poles and their lower level sled. The Predator has 1-1/4″ poles and their heavy-duty sled. I have pulled this shack all over Mille Lacs and many other lakes with my 4 – wheeler with no problem at all. As for the side entry doors, man it is the greatest, teamed up with the Clam LED light bars it was the best year of ice fishing in the 17 years I have been doing this.
