So I was fortunate enough to find an Otter Lodge XT 1200 to replace my last Lodge I gave to my son. The shanty was already put together by Cabelas. Well the problem is I still get metal on metal sound when extending the poles. I took them apart and the shanty is put together properly with the plastic inserts. The plastic inserts are suppose to slide on the interior of the pole to eliminate the metal on metal situation. But, I still get that sound??? What gives? Is there a solution to this problem?

The only place that metal is being separated is at the point where one slides into the other. Once the smaller one is inside the larger one that tail end is unsupported and will rub on any wall it is being pushed towards.

The skinny is that there really is no problem, your house is not going to fall apart. My old otter from about 05′ has no plastic bushing and has made hundreds of extension/retraction slides. I will say that the tolerance gap between the newer Otter poles with the plastic ends is quite horrible and the amount of lateral movement when the poles are extended is not impressive…

If the problem really bothers you, you can take the poles apart and file a chamfer on the ends then add a little grease on the end of the smaller pole.

As mark said, that sound is normal, just get used to it or sell it. The next one you buy will do the same thing.

Thanks Mark, I understand. Being born and raised on a farm, metal on metal movement get’s my attention real fast!

    Thanks!
