Otter Hub Darkness

So I’ve been doing a lot of sight fishing for trout lately, mostly out of a buddies Otter XT650 Cabin. Well, I finally went out today with my personal clam Thermal x2 and man was I disappointed. That thing doesn’t get near as dark inside. I had a really hard time seeing bottom with all the light coming in through the quilting. Made for a real hard time sighting fish.

At first I figured I would just sell my clam and buy an otter knowing it would work well for this. But then I started thinking maybe I could buy the Otter XTH hub and still have a flip over and a hub for different situations. My only question then is, how dark do the XTH hubs get compared to the XT650 flip overs? Am I correct in assuming they are the same material and should be just as dark inside? Do the XT1200 flip overs get even darker inside? Thicker material= less light?

Any help pertaining to these models specifically is much appreciated. Either way I’ll be picking up a new flip-over or hub in the next couple of days. Seems to be some pretty good sales at the moment!

Scheels sells the Jason Mitchell XL4000T in a gray exterior and a black interior. I thought about buying one for spearing. If looking for a dark hub that or the Eskimo 949i might be a good option. I have no experience in the Otter hubs.

    949i is a great hub.

The issue with Otter hubs will be the Windows. They only Velcro in the corners, leaving spaces for light to get through. With some DIY Velcro work, you can get them sealed up pretty good.

The fabric won’t be as thick as the flip overs, so I’m not sure how that will affect sight fishing in you circumstances. I do know that mine can get pretty dark during the day, and I have no problem keeping visual of the bottom (albeit very shallow, relative to you if you’re going no after trout). Otter does a gear job of eliminating those annoying pinholes, and even the zippers and seams in that area seem to be pretty tight.

Long Story short: Not really sure. But if there is a hub out there that’ll work, Otter is probably one of the better bets.
