so i have my heart set on an otter lodge. I own a 2001 ford ranger ext cab stepside truck. the bed dimensions are 71″L x 40″W. the dimensions of the otter lodge are 76″L x 38″W so its 5″ longer than my truck bed. what are peoples experience with this problem? i guess my two options (well 3 if you count getting a new truck which i would love to do but dont have the money for now) are to close the tailgate and have the sled sitting on top of it a few inches. my concern with that would be wind wipping that around and making it unstable. is that a reasonable concern? the other option would be to leave the tailgate down and build a box extender to keep it secure but i dont like this option as much as i tend to just throw a bunch of stuff in the back of my truck and i wouldnt want things falling out. how have you overcome this problem or is it a pretty manageable issue?

    thanks for the feedback!

I’d say leave the tailgate closed and have the house sitting on top of the closed gate. put a ratchet strap across from drivers side rear rail to passenger side rear rail (or rear stake pockets) if it seems necassary for securing it. You should be good to go and you will be able to have your tailgate shut as you desire. Good luck fishing!
