Otter/clam runner kit difference maker?

I currently have a one man flip over that I usually pull by foot a good half mile. I’m thinking about upgrading to a bigger shack specifically the otter cabin and it’s about double the weight of my current shack(45vs95LBS). My question is if I have a runner kit on the new flip over how much of a difference will it make when pulling it? My one man that I pull currently does not have a runner kit.

I think you’ll get more value by making a smitty sled than a hyfax kit, especially if you are only pulling by hand.

The runner/Hyfax kits make little-to-no difference when pulling the sled by hand. It won’t pull any easier. They’re meant to protect the bottom of the sled when pulled behind an ATV.

With snow the hyfax on my otter it seems to make it pull way harder than without them. They cut into the snow and cause drag. Now without snow, bare ice, they pull super easy. I would say if only pulling by hand id opt out of the hyfax. Unless you hook it to a machine at all then definitely add them to protect your investment.

People that are using a smitty sled are you just loading the flip over into the box of the truck on top of the smitty sled already?

I’m guessing they throw the smitty sled on top of the fish house when in the box of the truck. But if you’re going to be pulling it by hand the smitty sled is the way to go over getting hyfax. The hyfax are there to save the sled when being pulled behind a sled or atv/utv.

I agree with everyone else here. I have the resort and used pull it by hand a lot in SE WI. The first year I would sometimes compromise where I would fish just because it was too much to pull sometimes. I seen another guy with a smitty and I was sold. If I’m not driving the truck or the wheeler my shack is on a smitty.

I helped a member on this site build a smitty sled and we made it so you took it apart after each use and put it in the back of the truck next to the fish house. All kinds of solid or collapsible options out there…

My smitty sled is easily assembled/disassembled ,so it can slide into the bed of a truck next to the ice house.

My smitty is also a “take-down” model that breaks down into 4 pieces (two ski’s and 2 cross pieces). I set it along side the house and everything still fits under my pickup cover. I was fortunate enough this year that I didn’t even use it. By the time we got enough snow to justify it, there was enough ice for my ATV.
