Apologies if this belongs somewhere else but the General Discussion seemed like a fitting place. Are any of you guys home brewers? I’d love to shoot the $h!t with fellow home brewers on IDO.

Side note: If anyone is in the metro area and wants any beer, wine, mead, cider, etc I’ve got tons of bottles and at least 4-6 kegs at a time going and due to COVID can’t possibly (despite my best efforts and what it may seem on the boards) drink that much so if anyone’s interested and thirsty shoot me a message. NOTE: It does all taste like Hamm’s… devil

    Cheers toast

You can brew beer cheaper than you can buy Hamm’s? I didn’t know home brewing was that cheap to do.

KP, Use your equipment to make Whiskey. You can buy a distilling still on Amazon, just search distilling equipment. Whiskey is basically distilled beer without the hops. Using Barley based mash you get Scotch. You can use any malted product such as rye, wheat, add corn and your on the way to bourbon. You can get charred barrels as well. We distilled some of our homemade chokecherry wine to brandy, cured it in a barrel for a year, turned out excellent.

I had no clue you could do that! I always thought it was illegal to make your own whiskey. I’m gonna have to do some research on them.

Distill at your own risk in Minnesota

I know of guys that do it. If you’re distilling for your own use, I can’t fathom getting busted.

Heck you can make your own setup pretty easy. This one was made for distilled water purposes only of course

I used to do a lot of homebrewing. Started with the kits from Northern Brewer on Grand Ave in St Paul and then got into all grain brewing and making your own recipes. It was fun. We would have “Brew Days” on a saturday and a few guys would come over and bring a new craft beer for everyone to try and it’d be an all day event with some grilling or cooking involved. Just got tired of the craft beer scene and moved over to bourbon. Never did drink all that homebrew we made either. At the end we were making 10 gallon batches.

Sorry to break the news to you bearcat but it is definitely illegal both at the state level (Minnesota) and federal level to distill whiskey/moonshine without a license.
But so is speeding, so don’t get caught. lol

Pete once the world returns to normal if you ever wanna get together and talk Twins (no numbers allowed, I promise) I’d welcome some feedback on the home brews.

Always wanted to check out distilling too as a big gin and whiskey guy but haven’t ventured yet. The fw would definitely frown upon a new hobby that takes up more space

I had a roommate after college that did this. He offered some of his to others to try but then he started to sell it. Then he got busted…

As long as you aren’t distributing it for sale, have at it.

Don’t get caught making it either because that is illegal. Has nothing to do with selling it.

Gotcha. Was just going off of Ralph talking distilling. Yeah don’t want to get caught doing that. The government doesn’t mess around when it comes to liquor and beer laws if you are caught.

You guys have it all wrong. It’s not whiskey, it’s hand sanitizer, at least 60% ethanol will suffice(120 proof). Store it in barrels when you need it, the brown color simply helps to keep track of how much you have left in the bottle. Methanol evaporates at a lower temperature so you need to throw away the first bit of it but after that it does a great job of keeping those virus’s in check. I find that a good daily mouthwash of it does wonders as well you should swallow it just in case any of those buggers got into your digestive system. Here’s a good book on making your own hand sanitizer…Don’t be fooled by the title!

Don’t want guy’s in blue windbreakers with ATF on the back to come knocking!
