After 2 odd breakoffs at the end of last year (one of which almost put me in the river), I am finally giving up on power pro. I have spiderwire and pp on most of my flathead/sturgeon rigs but am gonna respool them all this spring. I bought a spool of hi-vis ripcord on clearance at cabelas and have never tried it before. Just wondering if any of you are using it or tried it and what you think of it. Thanks

I don’t know of anyone using that so let us know how it turns out.

There’s ex power pro users and then there are the folks that haven’t had the unexplained break offs yet.

The knocks on Power Pro almost make think they changed their formula or the way they make it. I have probably 1500 yds left on some Power Pro that was made about 12 years ago. I have never broke the stuff off on a fish – ever. But you guys are scaring me off enough that I may switch brands if I ever go through all my stash.

I’ve never had a break off with PowerPro. I’m curious about these break offs. Is it happening on the hook set? I use circle hooks only so I never set the hook. I let the fish load up the rod and I reel down for the set. I’ve put some big fish in the boat using PowerPro and never had a single break off. I’ve pulled hooks from too much pressure on the fish near the boat but the line wasn’t the problem I still had the hook at the end of the fight. I use 80# PowerPro and some of it is 5+ years old. I love the stuff.

I’m not a catfisherman, but I personally only use Suffix 832. I haven’t had any issues with it, other than that I is expensive.

    I have tried it. 2/10
The line started to fray after about 3 trips. This was 10 pound line that broke on 12 inch walleyes and saugers. If you do need to change braid I think you should spend the extra money on fireline or sufix 832.

I’m not doubting you all on the power pro… but I just got back from up north and yesterday I landed a 47″ Sturgeon on new 10 lb power pro. took a while but it did not break

Hmmmm… these break offs happening in snags or purely on the weight of the fish? If you use at least 80 lb power pro(minimum) and it’s just you vs. the fish with no other complications, a bad knot or knick in your line is all that would make this happen. Only break offs I’ve had happen on power pro were on quick and clean snags(one notorious snag) that would slice through anything. Even in snags with multiple species over 30 lbs(fresh and salt), power pro has always outperformed anything else i’ve used which is at at least fifteen other well known and obscure brands. Guess I haven’t broken one off yet, Brian:).

I’ve used a lot of different lines over the years and just never had breaks like I have with PP. I’ve never had a break on a fish thankfully it has always been in a snag (the snags I fish are purely timber and not rock). Its not the fact that the line is breaking its where its breaking and under the amount of stress. I always use 80lb line to a swivel and at least a 50 lb mono leader. I tie good knots and trust them well, but I also understand that no matter the knot it should be the weakest spot in the line. The breaks occur at random places in the line. The one that almost put me out of the boat broke 6 feet from the end of my rod. Its the only line I have ever used that doesn’t break consistently at the knot. The other part is that I understand pulling at a snag is going to probably end up breaking the line but the amount of force needed sometimes is no where near what I would expect for it to break. I don’t know maybe I bought a bad batch or recently their QC has gone down but I’m done with it.

I have used RipCord but mostly on baitcasters for Bass fishing and had very good results with it.

My favorite braid is Crystal visibility, strength, abrasion resistant for me is excellent for.
