    Howdy,

I have a 788CI in the back of the boat by the tiller. Right now I’m using my old FL8 up in the bow when I’m on the trolling motor. It’s showing it’s age, and I’d like to upgrade to something better. I have limited funds available for this. The Piranha series caught my eye. I just want to see the depth and maybe what the weeds look like underneath me. Any thoughts?

    Thanks

I have a Piranha Max 170, vintage 2010, that came with my boat. I mounted it on the bow so whomever is with me isn’t always asking me what the depth is. It shows “the depth and maybe what the weeds look like underneath”. It still works 10 years later.

What is your budget you watch on the BBC boards many older 1198, 1199 or 9s and 8s come pretty darn cheap, i think would be better then the Piranha series. Pick up a used 1198 put that in the back and your 7 up front. Just my 2 cents.

The 1100 series of locators are going for $400-$600 the SI models going for the $600 range. That is well above what the Piranha stuff is going for. Maybe a 7″ older screen will be in the same price range as a piranha.

You could do a 8 or 9 series and still be way ahead.

OK, I hadn’t thought of moving the 788 up to the bow and putting something newer back by the tiller. I know nothing about ethernet/networking depth finders. I looked through Humminbird’s website to see if you could , for example, network my 788 to a Helix 5, and if so what information would be passed. This gets confusing really fast.
