Opening Day In Maryland

Today was the Maryland spring turkey opener and was one of the hottest openers I have hunted 80* and bright sunny sky. It turned out to be a very rewarding one though. I played a chest mach with this bird for four hours with a couple close calls before he finally made the mistake and came in.

I set up about 150 yards from a tom and some hens I had roosted the night before on the edge of an large reforestation area as I figured they would come out into it to feed in the grass. At fly down the birds didn’t come out into the opening they stayed in the woods an I would see glimpses of them every once and a while as the fog was very thick and hard to see any further then 60-70 yards. I sat there for about and hour and a half waiting for the fog to burn off as it did the bird seemed to get fired up and was gobbling much more now and would cut me off every time I called. I held tight letting a few calls out every 15 mins hoping he would make his way in.

Had a couple close calls as I was trying to cut him off once jumping deer, another time spooking one of the hens before I was able to call him in at 10 am and shoot him at 10 yards.
He had 10′ beard and one spur that was 1 1/4 and the other 1 1/8. Going to get a barn board plaque to mount the fan and beard to.

Nice job waiting him out! It’s pretty rare for me to be able to sit them out like that so its always fun to read a story where it works out for someone. Great bird, do you get more than one tag up in that part of the country?

I don’t generally hunt this style but where I currently live there are very few turkeys and they are very scattered so this was the only bird I had to hunt. We get two tags in Maryland. I will be going back to NY where i grew up to hunt birds this May.

Thanks guys. Going again this weekend with my buddy to a urban spot I have hopefully they are there. One of those small wood lots were some days they come through some they don’t.

Have to make a trip to out here some year Joel NY and PA have some really good turkey hunting in places. NY last couple winters have really taken a toll on the populations though dont have the birds there was in 2010.

I really want to go to ks and Ne to turkey hunt here soon. After my antelope trip last year I’m hooked on the west. I just loved hunting a different type of land.
