I’m actually not fishing the opener this year. Too much to do at the cabin I would rather address. Plus its opener there as well so I can fish some. Planning to hit it next week after work a time or two. When it picks up maybe take a little time off work. I never have free weekends in the cities anymore so its next to impossible to get out in the mornings or mid-day which are usually best on the Croix. It will be interesting how the low water effects fishing this weekend. High water sure hasnt done anything for opener the last few years so maybe it will be good?

I’ll be on the Croix early. Planning a 4:30 departure. Fishing until 10 am. Then the kids stuff kicks in for the weekend.

Every year is different but I’m sure in those 5+ hours I’ll be trying many of the things that have worked in the past. Hopefully we hit something that’s working fairly early so we can concentrate on that as long as possible.

77 forecasted high according to Belinda. That in itself will make it different than most of the openers I remember.

    Good luck to all!

Today was the best opener I can ever remember on the Croix. Weather was fantastic. Wind was not a problem. There were lots of boats, but at least some of them contained some eye candy. We ended up with 8 keepers. Caught 4 before lunch and 4 after lunch. All were between 16 and 20 inches. I got schooled by my buddys (Brent and Ross). They each kept 3 fish and I was the 2 fish wonder. All our fish were caught on crawlers. Probably because that is all we fished with. It was a really weird opener with the warm weather and unbelievable low water. We will be out again tomorrow.

I fished a red horse run on the Namekagon Sat morning. Most were so big I couldn’t one hand grab them. One surprise fish that came in had a white tipped tail so my wife and I had walleye for dinner on opener!

Entertaining “Opener” on the croix for me this weekend.

Other than about 100 walleye boats and 50 pleasure boats piling into my previously established “Hot Spot” saturday killing any bite what so ever. That was to be expected though – so i used the rest of the weekend to try out new things and find new water.
