Opener?

A week Ago I would have thought the chance of open water for opener was 0%. Am I crazy, with the current forecast, to think there is a slight chance? Maybe I give it a 10% chance now…….

Whats everybody else think? I know there is a lot of time yet and a lot can change, but lets discuss…….

I’m sticking with my guess posted from 3+ weeks ago that a lot of places will be open(barely). I think Mille Lacs could be included in that if there’s some wind mixed in as the shorelines let go. Same for the popular metro lakes. Far northern lakes I’m not very optimistic about.

These heavy snows delayed things…but the most recent couple of storms hit from MSP South to Rochester, not up on some of the biggest popular lakes.

I could be 100% wrong, but 60 degree temps and the fact that the sun doesn’t set until 8:00pm is a game changer. A lot of anglers could be pleasantly surprised a few weeks from now.

I am sticking with my guess from a while back also. I would bet my last nickle Mille Lacs will not be open. Red is a lot shallower lake, but again still snow covered and lots of ice. It would take a miracle.

I remember a few years ago, we had an winter/spring like this and the ice went out the day before opener on Red. We had our eyes glued to a real time satellite view of the lake. But for the life of me, I can’t find it. Does anyone out there have the link??

Thanks Fish! The MODIS one is the one I was looking for.

Justin, that webcam doesn’t appear to be operational right now. I wasn’t able to get it to work anyway.

Taken 4/28/17, it is on Johnsons Portsides facebook page. Posted 30″ of good ice yet. Some spots look dark, but not like its busting up with any amount of wind yet. Opener will be a week later.

I am looking forward to some good fishing. The most consistent opener spot I have ever fished. Guess that’s why we have been going there for opener since walleye reopened in 2006.

Suzuki – If ya don’t mind throwing a report in when you get back or PM me? I’d appreciate it. My family and friends have gone up to Red for memorial week every year since the last 2 years of crappie only fishing. Have fun! Low water, so be heads up when coming out of the landings.

Another great opener is in the books. The guys in the cabins had outstanding fishing both days with the 5 to 8 pm bite on fire.
Some one hit the panic mode and somehow they were able to dig out the channel going out of the tamarac starting Friday. Before opener. Quite the sight coming out in your boat and driving by two tractors and a backhoe sitting out in the lake Saturday and sunday.
The fishing should stay pretty good for a few weeks. We do have the two cabins here with plenty of open dates during the week.
Saturday day was pretty busy but buy late afternoon the landing was wide open.
I still have not found any morels mushrooms but maybe this week.

We had an outstanding opener. Fishing was top notch to the point of being easy once you found the right area. We caught loads of fish all day on both days. All fish 15-19″. Trolled shallow running shads then jigged minnows or bobbers when we located concentrations. Fish were shallow. 4-6′. Shiners we’re not available but fatheads seemed to work better than rainbows. Bigger was better.

Another weekend is in the books. The guys in the cabins did all right but the fishing did slow. maybe due to the water getting stirred up from the winds and the cold front that moved through.. today Monday looks like its shaping up to be a beautiful day. ken is here for a couple days and scott and his parents are coming tomorrow for a day or two. The kids will be coming for the holiday weekends so I guess I better get the boat in the water this week. I held off due to the low water but the park was able to jump through some hoops and dig out the channel so I think I’m ok. The access was crazy busy yesterday and I still have no clue where they all come from. I guess its just a combination of other resorts and people with cabins with in 100 mile radius.
