Open Water

Looking to get my boat in the water this weekend and try some walleye fishing. I’m from the Eau Claire area and not sure where to start or where there is open water. Looking to put the boat in at Beanie’s Marina. Haven’t fished on the St. Croix, so not sure if this is the best place to go. Any suggestions to get on the walleyes? Please let me know if you have a better place to start and what’s working during this time for walleyes.

Season doesn’t open until May 2 for walleyes on the St.croix

The Mississippi south of the st.croix confluence is open to them, with different restrictions. As is the pool south of the Ford dam starting in St.Paul, but there it’s catch and release.

A 2020 DNR regulations book downloaded online for free will give you information you need.

    Good luck!

St Croix river is closed to walleye fishing, it is also frozen.

For walleyes, you’ll want to look at Pool 2(Catch and release only) or pool 4 in redwing.
Mississippi is open all the way to Iowa.
Barge traffic started yesterday through pools 4,3,2.

Both pool 2 and 4 and high water and you should proceed with caution.

Given the high water, I think right now would be a great time to hire a guide for either pool 2 or pool 4 and pay really close attention to the launching and landing of the boat as well as the where, what and how that gets the fish.
Right now is not the time for novice anglers to test skills they may not have in dealing with what the river can hand them.

I would suggest going down to the Alma dam the landing is much easier but the fishing is a little more spotty.
