Hey guys – I know it’s been awhile. I’ve been poking around again in the forums and see many of the same names and faces I remember from years ago. Though I’m “new” here again, many of you I consider friends or know through the industry, sportshows, and other events. This has always been a great place to share what’s new in the world of fishing, and that’s what I’m hoping to do today. I’m also looking to get your feedback if you’re willing.

As some of you might know, I recently took a job with onX to lead their new onX Fish app. For those of you familiar with onX Hunt, you know how it has revolutionized how we do everything from chasing turkeys and deer, finding private land access, and measuring land features. Rather than a revamp of the Hunt product, onX Fish is a new app specifically tailored to the needs and challenges of the fishing community. After seeing what’s in store for onX Fish, I wanted to offer you all a first glimpse of what’s coming.

We all understand that a successful day on the water starts with a plan. Knowing the type of fish you’re targeting, their habitat, and how to access these spots is crucial. That’s where onX Fish steps in. This tool is designed to provide comprehensive details to help you plan effectively, including:

-Species Information: Learn about the fish size, distribution, and trophy potential.
-Access Points: Find the best boat ramps and accessible spots on lakes and rivers.
-Land Ownership: Get insights on public and private land around your fishing water bodies.
-Weather Data: Get up to date weather information for your area, including wind, barometer, and moon major/minor times.
-Fishing Regulations: Stay updated with the latest rules to keep your fishing trips legal and ethical.

I invite all of you to explore onX Fish and how it can help both on and off the water. The app is currently offered exclusively in Minnesota, and is available for free for a limited time on the App Store or online. Consider this your insider’s opportunity to try it out and see how it can change the way you fish. This product is still beta, so understand that we’re in the background working to make it better, especially with your help and comments. There’s a feedback section directly in the app where you can make your wishes for onX Fish known!

Check out more details on our website – https://www.onxmaps.com/fish/app or simply download the app to get started. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences with onX Fish. Let’s make every fishing trip better planned and more rewarding.

    Tight lines and happy fishing!

    Joel

Knowing how OnX has been a major player in the hunting realm, Good to see them throwing their weight into fishing. At first glance, it seems they are taking a “facts first” approach (which I appreciate).

Thanks for the early access invite!

I see you have contours listed but no depth numbers – that I assume is coming. To me the most useful info would being able to sort the creel and survey data for size distribution on fish. The Iowa DNR does a really good job at this so oyu can sort your lakes who have the highest trophy potential of X species.

I heard something about this last year on a podcast.
I will have check it out.

OnX sure beats the old days to buy plat books for half the counties in the Midwest.

    Hey Joel
Good to see you back here as well.

I ran into you at Kwik Trip in Northfield and said hello a few weeks ago if you remember. I wish we could have talked longer as if I would have known of your new position, I would have asked a lot more questions.

Anyways, been looking forward to the new app for awhile. I briefly checked it out but will dig into it further. waytogo

Nice to see you back Joel and looking forward to using and trying this app, big fan of Onx hunt. Any consideration by OnX to consolidate the hunt and fish into one app?

I submitted that in the feedback in the app, as I agree I would much prefer OnX Hunt and Fish integrated into one app. Also, they are using the DNR Lake Finder Maps right now it looks like, hopefully they work out a deal with Lakemaster or someone for far more detailed/accurate maps. Checked out a few of my favorite spots on Mille Lacs and they were not close to accurate. I love OnX and I know Joel’s background so I’m sure it will get figured out.

Heard about it but will have to check it out for myself.
The number of fishing apps seems to be growing which is cool. Curious to see how this compares to Omnia premium – maps with Navionics & C map, bottom hardness, vegetation, etc. Omnia is focused solely on mapping and their fishing reports, not so much DNR data.

Must only be for iPhone? Doesn’t come up for Google Play Store on Android. At least not for me. But I love OnX hunt! Hope the beta testing works great.

Same here. I tried logging into OnX through Google Chrome as well and it doesn’t show Fish as an option.

I was able to download it on my Android phone using the link Joel supplied in his introduction message. Looks very cool, wondering what the criteria is for a lake getting listed as a trophy lake? Also I agree, the lakemaster maps would be much more accurate. Checking a couple spots and they were off a bit…..

Hey all, here’s the direct link for all apple phones – https://apps.apple.com/us/app/onx-fish-minnesota/id6466307868

There is currently no android version, but you can check out the same functionality and more on the web version – http://www.onxmaps.com/fish

Both are free for the time being!

Thanks for the question! It’s unlikely we’ll combine into one app, as things would get a bit crowded trying to serve hunters and anglers alike. That said, we’re looking into bundling options for those that also enjoy onX Hunt.

I loaded the app and will try it out. My main purpose is to see underwater structure and depths- if you can do that better than the DNR and Navionics apps, you have me as a customer. The contour depth information doesn’t seem to be there yet. Weather data, land ownership and fishing regulations are not what I need in an app.

I guess I’m not sure, I had to set up an account with password and when I was done it placed an icon on my phone…maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about! frown
