Over the weekend I got to spend some time in a boat that was brand new. The owner had a new Onix 10 for the mapping capability for some of the lakes he fishes.

The onix unit worked as advertised with the latest update, other then it still not being able to share any info. Could be a rigging issue not 100% sure. The detail we were getting in 40-60ft of water was great and the touch feature was great as well.

I couple of things we noted and more of a gripe then anything.

Is if your upgrading units, you do need different transducers, least that is what the dealer told him. We did not know if that was true or not. We were trying to find out this information off of HB’s site and some of the manuals. Seemed like most of the questions out there relates to this information that seems to be hard to find.

We wish that with this new unit, if there is a network diagram on what is needed so get a better understanding on how to incorporate the Onix with your existing HB network(terrova, 11xx-7xx series) . Items include would be what is exactly needed for units to talk to each other, like 11xx at the bow and onix at the console and maybe a 3rd unit in the back.

Come out with service bulletins…..Example the constant rebooting on the 11xx series(brand new ones), this could be seen on your myHB site relating to the units you registered.

The last thing we both agreed on was this, the $100 for the special map card needed to save your scans. He wish that since the unit retails for $3k, it wish it would have been included with the unit, or at least let people use a normal SD card.

visit the BassBoatCentral website under the Humminbird message board section for all things Humminbird. The link details are posted there…but basically the 2.30 update allows the high end xxx8 & xxx9 models to talk with an Onix if you have the adapter cable installed.

While the transducer connection to the back of the unit is different, the metal bracket screwed into the boat hull is the same, so you simply swap the old ducer for the new one with the same bracket (Yes you’ll need to reroute the cables, but if you just attach the new cable to the old one at the battery, you can pull the new one right through to the console)

Are you sure the Onix Auto-Chart Live requires a special card to save recorded maps? I thought it just needed to encrypt an existing SD card or you can save a few maps to the unit itself? I might be wrong on this…

I chose to get a 999 vs Onix, I felt the Onix line was still buggy and something new will come out in 1-2 years that will blow it away…

for the SD card, one needs a Zero Line map card, least that is what I am understanding.

I thought that was just for the legacy series, I thought the Onix had it built in? hopefully an owner chimes in..

The Onix comes with 8 hours of record time for autochart live. After that is used up you need a Zeroline card. There is no map data on a zero line card till you create it. so on lakes already mapped you want a Lakemaster or Navionics card.
