I was born in the greatest time of rock & roll. I grew up with the radio and 8 tracks and cassettes cruising the loop and the streets of St. Paul. Because of that I have a instant recognition when one of the favorite songs come on who the artist was.

    Piano Man…Billy Joel
    Smoke on the Water…Deep Purple
    Sweet Caroline…Neil Diamond
    Imagine….John Lennon
    Hey Jude….Beatles
    Taking care of business…BTO

How about you any favorites instantly click?

More a blues and southern rock guy. Allman Brothers Blue Sky, Ain’t Wasting Time No More, Jessica; Clapton Let It Rain, After Midnight, Sunshine of Your Love; Chicago’s first five albums. All are still on my playlist.

I have a usb thing in the truck, haven’t listened to radio in many years. Is Tom Bernard still on KQ? Anyway I have a bunch of stuff I like and no commercials or endless blathering.

Tom Bernard retired some time ago from KQRS.

I enjoy a variety of classic rock that dutchboy mentioned above. Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles are two of my favorites.

Finally, a post that makes me feel young.

Give me Metallica, Tool, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine, etc.

And Radar Love by Golden Earring. That’s an all time great.

LOL. It’s called sarcasm. Last time I listened to radio was “some time ago”.

Sirius XM is great. No commercials and I can listen to any genre of music I want to plus sports, news, comedy, etc. Worth every penny and I don’t even spend a ton of time in the car.

I usually listen to Blues, and that’s hard to find on the air. Even the B.B. King channel on SXM misses the mark. Other wise yes you’re right.

Have you tried the app? It has like 300 extra channels. I found some good ones I never knew existed. Maybe there are some better Blues channels there.

Steppenwolf. Iron BUtterfly. Neil Diamond. Mamas and Papas. Peter, Paul and Mary. Some of Kenny Rogers stuff was good. REO Speedwagon. Chicago. There are a ton of bands that aren’t around anymore.

Listening to an Americana station on XM a while back and they played 4 consecutive songs, 3 of them I hadn’t heard in years that made a long drive shorter.

    Crazy Love – Poco
    The Weight -The Band
    Dixie Chicken -Little Feat
    Whipping Post -Allman Brothers

I work less than 5 miles from home and for some reason I only hear commercials at the time I drive into and leave work. So I don’t even turn on the radio. That and the radio sucks in my truck. At home I use multiple streaming services, large refrigerator size diy speakers, and my system can do 130dB at 15hz. A good song on a great system can change your day. I don’t miss 8 tracks or cassettes at all and vinyl only skips. I am ready to go home and turn it up. Too bad it is only Monday morning. peace

The older I get, the more time I spend driving in silence with the window 1/3 of the way down. My wife thinks I’m crazy for not blaring music while I drive, but to each their own.

With 2 kids, a third on the way, one career job, and 2 side gigs…the quiet time is very very rare, but still very therapeutic.

@Rodwork. I hear you! I have a great system and a honkin big flat screen. Nothing better than great music that actually sounds amazing. Also, with this setup, there are some incredible music videos out there and when played on a huge screen with an excellent sound system, it adds so much. Check out some of the VNV Nation vids, or Steam Powered Giraffe. Go with The Steam Rises or Hunnybee. I’d also recommend Gunship videos. They have a Miami Vice vibe and despite being a contemporary band, they also have a very fond spot for 70’s, 80’s and 90’s memories.

How come on xm they block swear words? That would be like Showtime blurring out boobies.

It’s a shame we have to do the song and dance thing every single year. I’ve heard of a lifetime rate but nobody has ever offered it to me.

I’m almost 50 and haven’t listened to a radio in 8 years. Don’t know why I would unless I’m trying to see if I should go out and watch the tornado go by. I could even Bluetooth Spotify in my 98 Silverado. I went out of my way to disconnect the XM radio antenna in my current truck. They got all the way down to .99 cents. Then I went and bought another car and now they are sending me the stupid emails. Down to six bucks already.

I will check out these recommendations. Thank you. If I turn it up too loud I can’t watch the TV because the pressure in the room makes the center of the TV turn white with each bass note. It is very distracting.

Is it making the tv turn white or making you have a stroke?

TV will turn white in the center like you took your hand and push on the screen. This even happens when the door to the room is open. This system is in my pool room so it’s not a big deal. The TV is only used to select the music. It is just a 2-channel bookshelf system with DIY subs. (driver count: x32 tweeters, x8 5-1/2″ mid, x2 18″ mid bass, and x4 18″ infinite baffle subwoofers. 13,000 watts) You can feel every note with very low distortion. I had to add velcro to all the pictures in the house so they stay on the walls and super glue in the pins that holds the toilet seat on the upper level toilet. The pins would resonate, work themselves out, and the seat would end up on the floor.

I love the music from the 70s, 80s and 90s, but that’s always there and nowadays it’s always accessible.

What I miss and that is mostly gone forever is the stereo equipment from that era. Those stacks of components with their flickering analog meters or later the digital graphs. And it was just cool. Does anybody remember those Technics turntables that held the record vertically? There was just so much cool stuff back then.

You could tell a LOT about a person by their choices of stereo equipment. The brands they had, components they had and didn’t have, etc.

I sold all my speakers and components. They reached the point where they were considered “vintage” (yikes! You know what that makes me…) and some of it was worth quite a bit of money. I don’t miss the space it took up and with kids there wasn’t (isn’t) much time to sit around and just listen to music, but it was kind of end-of-an-era sad to part with most of it.

But I miss that stuff and I still think about getting something cool but simple. Maybe just a Bang & Olufson Beosound with that freaking cool vertical CD player/changer… Man, I always thought those were just so cool. And that would be great with a pair of speakers from…
