Old lures, new life

I’ve had a pair of very old Hot Shot lures laying around for several years. They’re a bait of the 1950’s vintage. Both of these are the “fly” fishing size. Both were in rough shape. I got an order for a pair of ear rings using the 7/10″ micro crank bodies to be done in what I call my “blue perch” finish so I took time to pull the old, rusted hardware off the two Hot Shots, then scraped the old finish off and ended by sanding as best I could to get the new finish on them and not have to mix a bunch more new colors. I had to use the edge of a fine flat file to cut flats for the eyes to attach. Ironically the original eyes were the toughest part of the original finish and were perfect in spite of the original finish being in pretty bad shape.

The blue perch color scheme has been proving itself to be pretty favorable this summer so I was ok with painting the bait this color. These old baits cleaned up pretty darned nice. I’m hoping to get them in the water yet this fall. I remember fishing this bait years ago when I was a kid and catching some real big sunfish using them. I’ll give them a whirl and then put them in a safe place for the memories.

Nice job! Should catch all species.

Recently a buddy I hadn’t fished with for years has bugged me to fish with him. Good thing because I’ve never been a fan of trolling lures but after beating the banks and not doing very well, we trolled small crankbaits down the middle of the lake in 8′. The quality of fish – perch and crappie – blew me away! The lure you posted I’ll bet would work great trolled.

Keys for outbuildings at the cabin all have old cranks.

I can always do Christmas ornaments with my fish lures and use them for that string weight for the basement lights.
