Does IDO still do the trip with Rainy Lake houseboats in May or June???? I was watching an old episode from 2012 and James was talking about doing a trip with IDO staff and IDO members to the east end of rainy lake. Can someone please fill me in if this trip still takes place?? Thank you in advance!!

No, I don’t think it does. I believe Chris Granrud set those trips up. He no longer is affiliated with IDO.

Bummer!! I am looking at doing a fishing trip to Rainy and this would have been a great way to learn the lake very quickly. Thanks for the reply!

It’s not possible to learn that Lake quickly. It’s a vast lake, although if you are a jig fisherman and have the proper equipment for a lake that size you can find fish. Depending on time of year and the bite you can work the reefs from Sand Bay all the way East through the Brule Narrows over to Kettle Falls. Feel free to toss me a PM if you have questions.

Thank you for the offer!!! I am actually meeting up with a couple guys tomorrow that I do the fishing trips with. I also just purchased a new Triton 206 Allure with a 250 Verado last week so I defiantly have the equipment…. its the knowledge of the lake im worried about!

Get a chip for your locator. Then go buy a paper map you can reference on nights like this. When people are talking about a certain bay you can easily find it on your map and make notes. It makes a nice reference piece in the spring before your trip. Also you can then go back through the Rainy section here and know what areas guys are talking about when giving reports.

It’s a very special body of water as you will find out.

Also, read back on old posts on here about Rainy Lake, there is a lot of good info. I have fished this lake in early October for the past 5 years for walleyes and have been learning the lake from maps, old info on here and from others that have fished it.

Best advice is to get a chip for your locator as mentioned. Not only will it help finding mid lake structure, but also help seeing mid lake rocks that come out of nowhere flame

In early June the east end Canadian side is best. In July and August not much difference unless you are Muskie or Crappie fishing. I strongly suggest you hire a guide the first day. Mike Williams is very good and will show you around and give you lake history. Worth every penny and then some.

Just a heads up but Chris Granrud owns Rainydaze Guide Service if you’d like to learn the lake straight from the horses (or one of his guides) mouth.

x2, first day to learn a bit on current pattern and more importantly on how not to wreck your boat. Thankfully my buddy had 20 years on the north arm before I started going. Even then we’re found a few surprise rocks and close calls.

Paper maps still work great and good to mark rocks in bright red ink.
