I know its been said time and time again that the St.Croix Avid 6’9″MLXF is the rod for blade baits. Has anyone tried the new Okuma Dead-Eye Custom series 6’8″MLXF for blades that usually runs the Avids? Do they have a comparable, desirable action for blades? I’m look for a new rod for blades on the river and saw the “strategically” placed add in the last couple of shows so I’d figure i’d see if anyone has fished with them yet. Any thoughts on this particular rod are appreciated. Thank you.

I have used all of the Dead Eye Custom rods and I would definitely recommend the 6’8″ MXF. The Medium Light is a little bit lighter than St. Croix. I have not fished them with blade baits in particular but if I was going to the river to throw blades tomorrow the MXF would be the first rod I would grab.

Here’s a short video I did last fall pitching #7 Jig Raps with the 6’8 MXF

Pat, I’m going to mostly stay under the 3/8 ounce mark for blades on the Mississippi, you don’t think the 6’8″MXF will be too stout of a rod to work those blade baits? Thank you for you comments, I haven’t seen any reviews of these rods.

I don’t think it would be too stout, but I guess the best thing to do is check them out for yourself and see which one you prefer for that application.
