March 20th is my prediction at Birchdale.

For 30 years I have wanted to fish the Rainy and have never made it. This year is the year.

Lmao the pics and vids already have gone nuts with just a sliver of a current seam opening at DePere. Guessing they want a repeat of last year

I’m waiting patiently. I’d like to get up there for a few days this year.

The Dutchman just posted a video of open water at Coots (?) Landing 9 miles west of IFalls. What happens after this warm front will decide if it’s super early or a more typical year imo. It wasn’t a super cold winter and this warm stretch is great!

Question for those with experience fishing the Spring Rainy River bite. Does An early thaw help any certain time to head up there? I have a cabin rented April 8th-11th. Reading reports from years past it seems after a few weeks of open water, the big and little fork rivers break loose then a week of waiting goes by and after that the bite is great with the warming water? Is there a chance at warmer water during the open season this year? I have never been able to make it up, just done a lot of research so I appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

An early thaw CAN help if the Forks break loose early there is more “clean” water season left after that. In my experience you are correct that it is about a week after the forks break that the water clears up, but that can change if we get a bunch of rain/snow. If this current weather keeps up it could be a nice long season. The best option is to drop everything and go before the forks go, or a week after they go, but not everyone can do that so I think going the last weekend like you are is a good plan.
