For me it starts with the cab. My Chevrolet extended cab was getting a bit cramped as my kids aged. I do quite a bit pulling of a boat and wanted more room in the back seat. 2002 and crew cabs were not yet popular and the only Chevrolet crew cabs that I seen available had 6.5′ boxes which would not fit in my garage at the time. I switched to Ford and owned my first crew with a 5.5′ box.
For me the extra space to travel with 3 or 4 people in comfort was more important than the additional space that a longer box allowed me to haul. Anything that was too large for my 5.5′ box just went on a trailer. And taking 2 or 3 of my ATVs on a little family outing no matter how hard that I tried was not going to fit in a 8′ box.
I no longer own a Ford but a crew with 5.5′ box still fills my needs. Still owning multiple ATV’s and now a side x side a trailer is still required (or possibly 2) so a longer box does not fill my needs. Now I have a longer garage but yet do not desire to go to a longer box on my crew cab. Now if you would change the world to build parking lots and parking garages to fit a crew cab with a longer box then maybe I would consider revisiting what I drive.
I have many friends that own trucks and boats. If we choose to take one persons boat out versus another does not dictate on whos truck that we use. Most of my friends do not own a crew cab. But when we take 3 or 4 people my crew cab is always volunteered to tow because of the comfort of the additional space in the rear seats. On hunting trips the same thing applies.
Personally my daily driver is not a truck. I prefer the approx. 50% increased fuel mileage that I obtain with one of my cars. However you might see me on the road with the truck not hauling anything for many reasons. And if I do not have multiple people in my truck that day and you see me then my apologies if this offends you.
Now should we discuss toppers, tonneau covers or why some guys decide to back in to a parking spot versus driving in forward?
