Oil Question

I have a 1994 60 HP Mercury. I’ve been using Mercury Quicksilver oil ever since I bought it and it’s worked fine. However the stuff is expensive and not always easy to find.

Can I get away with using any TC-W3 rated 2 cycle oil, or should I stick with Mercury’s brand?
If I do need the Quicksilver stuff, any idea where I can get some? I bought the last jug from Gander doah

    TIA

Yes, you can use any marine rated 2 stroke oil. Keep in mind, Mercury doesn’t make the oil, they just slap their name on it.

Try Pennzoil Premium Plus. Available at most Walmarts. I’ve had great service from this oil and in my outboards it smokes significantly less than Quicksilver.

West Marine had a nice selection of oils when I peeked through the store couple days ago. Quick Google shows they stick it. If I recall they also had the Pennzoil in 3 gallon jugs for pretty cheap.

I would think Fleet /Farm would carry it. Here in SW Wi Farm and Fleet carries Q Silver oil.

I’ve been getting mine at Home Depot and last I checked it was significantly cheaper than Wally World.

Fleetfarm should have it. Best store around IMO. Hopefully you got one near you. The boat I bought, the guy had been running a justice brothers tcw3. Good luck finding that stuff, even on the interweb. I switched to the quicksilver because it was always on hand and it is made for mercury in the first place. My mercury tech said to just dump it in with the oil already in the tank so I did…so far so good.

Also a question I have. Bought a pontoon with a 75 horse Evinrude e-tec. I have been told that I can only use XD100 oil. It’s a 2011 and long off warranty. Guy at Gander told me it’s really not necessary as quality oil is quality oil. Confused.

Guy at Gander was (surprisingly devil ) correct. As long as it’s rated the same as what the manufacturer recommends it will work. Try the Pennzoil, I think you will be very happy with it.

And no matter what they try and say, manufacturers cannot force the consumer to use their product to maintain a warranty. They can only require a certain standard, like TCW3, mixture ratios, change intervals, etc.

Have you considered going to Amsoil HP? Fleet Farm carries it.

Wasn’t that impressed with the HP. Switched to it from dino on my last tiller due to backtrolling so much, wanted the qualities I thought it might bring forth. Lil less smoky but that’s about it.

I’d be very leery of switching off the XD100 on an E-Tec. (XD100 is full synthetic. You do not want to use a dino oil in this motor.)

x2, though I have had problems finding it locally this summer (Walmart and Home Depot). I’ve used the “ship to store” option, though, as long as it’s not a “need it today” thing.

The synthetic AMSOIL HP Injector oil is the best I’ve found to run in my 115hp Optimax. No smoke, smooth idle, and no build up even though I use the motor for a ton of trolling.
