When is the last time someone heard of an engine failure due to lack of changing oil?

    I agree with grubson.

Take a gallon jug to a shop and ask for them to fill it with used oil from a car(s). Most cars only hold 4 qts. I’ll bet most shops will need 3 cars to fill a gallon. Don’t ask me how I know. 99% of car/truck owners never check anything underthe hood? Famous last words “The oil light didn’t come on”

As far as manufacturers go, if they are so smart why did they remove transmission dipsticks?
Another thing why doesn’t the oil light come on when a vehicle is 2 qts. low?

The cars I’ve owned always had a warning light if you were a quart low.

I had a 550 BMW and they were known for burning a ton of oil. If they burned a quart in less than 1000 miles it was considered problematic. Better than that was par for the course. We ran a test on mine and it burned about 3/4 quart in 1000 miles. The dealer told me just pull it in when the light came on and they would top it up. I had 80k miles on that but traded it in when the warranty came up. Burning that much oil seemed bonkers to me.

I use synthetic in the 2006 Jeep Libery and only change it twice a year, I bet the manual says 3000 miles, I have over 200k on the Liberty now. I think there is a small leak or it burns some oil and I might have to replace the PCV to fix

I bet you could drive a vehicle for longer than most of you guys keep them without ever changing the oil without any issues.

But why ? That’s just dumb.

I know from experience that there are/were many Ford, GM, and Chrysler products that the warning light never came on and the dipstick was dry.

The trucks I drive at work tell you when they need oil. When the 6.6 gas sounds like a diesel it’s time to add a little. Hours/miles are usually 1 to 1
