Is it just me or do others hate when manufactures change up there products? I must have starred at a bottle of oil for 20 minutes reading everything to ensure it’s the same oil I’ve been using for the last 20 years. I’d venture to guess, most people working on their own equipment could care less what the bottle looks like, rather they are getting the right product!

Who’s in marketing these day? listen up! LOL jester

I don’t read the bottle…I just find mobil 1 in the viscosity I need and move on

If you’re putting it in your car or truck, make damn sure it meets the spec provided in your owners manual. Not all do, even fully synthetic.

Seriously!! I was looking for 0W-20 Dexos for my truck last week. Thought I found it, grabbed two big jugs and went home. Went through the process and once I got about half the oil refilled, notice it doesn’t say Dexos…F^@&#^&@&^#&#*!!!!! Seems I grabbed the 0W-20 next to the Dexos.

Well…A little research later and it seems the Dexos is just some extra detergents to prevent deposits. Figure I’ll run it for 3k then change it out. Normally run it 5-6k.

I miss the days of 10w-30 could cover 90% of my needs…

There’s no marketing involved for me. The Schaefer’s truck stops and fills the rack of assorted weights in the family sheds three times a year. I don’t use any of the other crap out there. No commercials or fancy packaging are impacting me or keeping me from using what is best.

The one thing I do use something else in is my Optimax. For Optimax guys those outboards run perfectly on the AMSOIL synthetic injector oil (blue jug).

It’s been a goofy marketing game for years with automobiles. That same game has flooded over to just about everything. Couple things I came across that leaves me laughing at them.

My 300 case tractor is about 60 years old. 5 or 6 years ago, we had to crack her open and replace clutch, and some internal gaskets. Internal was CLEAN. Amazed how so many years of abuse didn’t translate to everything being crusted up with deposits. Been using the same buckets of generic oil produced by Exxon.

All the whole house generators, specialty motors, transmissions… needing “specialty “ lubricants making many proprietary to that.

We pulled a 70’s Chevy 327 and rebuilt it. Original owner bragged up how it ran for ever and only used penzoil. I don’t know how he even did oil changes in it. I never seen an engine so goopped up with crap.

What bugs me is that now that modern engines run oil with the viscosity of hangover urine, I can’t get a jug of good old Valvoline 10w-40 for my 1964 413 in the rod. We are having a warm spell and I want to take it out for a ride then change oil and put ‘er up on blocks for the Winter and I can’t find 10w-40 conventional oil!

Curious how long you have been running it and is it cheaper than the Merc stuff that is actually for the Optimax. Reason I ask is I was told only run the Merc stuff and the other couple guys I know running Optimax’s are doing the same as me. TIA

I’m the second owner of my current boat. The original owner ran the Mercury Optimax oil to the 160 hour mark when I purchased it. I have run the AMSOIL synthetic injector oil since. on my mechanic’s advice. Regardless of conditions, there’s legitimately no fumes. The mechanic that does all my work on everything around the buildings says it’s the best oil he’s seen for 2 strokes and not fouling spark plugs especially when I troll a ton with it.

I’m not sure what it even costs anymore. I find it at Fleet Farm generally, but have ordered it online a couple times over the years.

It better be the same stuff! Lol

The problem isn’t marketing, it’s the manufacturers constantly trying to game emissions and fuel economy legislation by tweaking everything from the oil to the freaking scent of the Christmas tree air freshener hanging from the mirror.

This week it’s Dexos, next week it’s Flexos, then it’ll be Hexos in the 2022 models, blah, blah, all because someone thinks tweaking the oil will give a .0002 percent mileage increase. That’s why all the OEMs are going toward this urine-water thin oil, because thin oil increases mileage. Do they care about your engine’s lifespan? Hell no.

The thing that matters the most with oil is to use the right oil for the operating conditions and to change it regularly.

Also, the WORST thing for an engine is not using the wrong oil. It’s not using the engine! Lack of use and poor storage practices kill engines far faster than any “wrong” choice of oil ever would.

When Burger King added neon to the outsides of their buildings, it increased sales by 9%.

How this fits in the oil thread I haven’t a clue.

Haha so on that note, it’s like when your favorite ________ (big box store) decides to redesign their entire interior so it takes you extra time wandering around trying to find the stuff you usually buy.

That coincides with the security cameras/software. When you walk into the store, your uniquely identified and numbered. The software tracks your movements within the store and precisely how much time per isle or department. At the time I was working on these systems, the software company was working with cash register companies to integrate the data of your sale. Prototypes worked and it was a matter of time to be implemented. At that point, they could track your time and what you spent money on. Then modify departments specific to the spending habits

In this example the highlighted “GEAR LUBE” is actually kind of nice that it easily identifies that it’s gear lube and not a different type/viscosity of oil.

And the online vs in store could be a matter of an updated picture online but older stock in the store, or vice versa?

Makes sense right? But the all black bottle is the new version I believe. I’ve always purchased the yellow bottle but only found this one…double checked on quicksilver website and they only show the yellow…but it’s the same product right?

I ran into this with trailer grease this summer. I don’t like to change grease in case it’s another blend that doesn’t mix. Company changed the graphics and it through me off. Like I said, I’m getting old, hate change.

It’s gear lube don’t overthink it. Same weight no problem.

I work for a large liquor company. Trust me the last year when all of our marketing people were sitting at home they had nothing better to do then try and change things that didn’t need changing.

A lot of marketing reminds me of the old saying:
