Oh, gear…

Nothing really new, but man I swear 95% of posts in this sub are about gear and electronics! I wish there was more talk of biology and ecology and even just tactics.

It’s fun talking about gear/technology/machines but what about the basics of FISH and their behavior and ways you interpret those and catch em?

Kind of just ranting here but the materialism(everyone’s guilty to some extent) just seems excessive sometimes. I do also understand the proof is probably in the pudding and if more ppl wanted to talk about that stuff they would be. And I also get that there are dedicated “species” sub-forums but they don’t get a lot of traffic.

Not to sure I like that word “materialism” and No way will I feel guilty for possessing an item, not a chance.

It is important to take into context the time of year.

    A. It’s that weird grey area where ice isn’t necessarily accessible for most, but boats are put away
    2. It’s right around Xmas time, with many looking at sales ads or shopping for others which also gets ideas for themselves.
    D. There is the greatest archive of fishing data right here in the site, you could spend many a days, weeks, months reading thru all those with the adjoining comments you’d need not be bothered by any materialistic threads again.

I think part of it is options. Look at what is now possible and the different brands that are available. It’s hard not to want or wish for these new innovations. Livescope, 360, wheel houses, hubs, electric augers, atv’s and sxs. It’s crazy what we can spend our money on now. I also do agree I wish there was more talk about actually fishing, but during the right times you will find it on the sub forums.

That’s one of the best parts about fishing. There are so many ways to do it. That’s why people like to talk about gear. Sure it get’s a little ridiculous at a certain point but it all comes back to actually fishing in the end. Once we finally get ice there will be much more actual fishing talk.

EPG You may want to look for a new to you model. Some of the younger models require more work to keep running without problems and some of the older models are more efficient than the younger ones. They all end up costing more than you wished they did but you need a spot to store your ugly stick and tackle. Every boat should want to hear three words “Lets go fishing.” Good luck, I hope you catch a good one.

The hard part about talking more about the basics of fishing is that it changes from lake to lake, day to day. Even spawn (if memory serves me correctly):
Most crappies spawn in shallow 1-4 foot areas, which have soft-dark bottoms (bays, creeks, or pencil reed patches.) Crappies have been found to start spawning in 55 degrees and the spawn could last until water temperatures reach 70 Degrees.
Walleye spawn over rock, rubble, and gravel in windswept areas in 1’ to 6’ around 42 to 50 degrees
Yellow perch spawn takes place soon after ice out in April through early May when the water temperature reaches 45 to 52°F in shallow, weedy areas of lake.
Largemouth bass need water of 2 to 6 feet deep with firm sand, mud or gravel to spawn. This takes place around 60 degrees between late April and early June.
Smallmouth bass like to spawn in shallow gravelly area of the lake.

EPG have fun at the distilleries. Been to Makers Mark many times for work. Really cool distillery and the people that work there are over the top nice. May even run into one of the Samuels when you are there.

My wife says the worst time of year for her and most spendy is the first week in November till first ice. I tend to do a lot of shopping the anticipation of gear and getting what you think you need in an effort to combat a fish with the brain the size of a pea can be overwhelming. Mr. Beads hit the nail on the head.

Honestly, I think for many of us, half the reason we ice fish is to continually figure out the best way to do it. I think it kind of goes into our caveman survival instincts on getting us out there in the most comfortable, safest, easiest way out there. It’s different from summer fishing when you plop yourself in a boat with some electronics and throw a line in the water.

With ice fishing, it’s about transportation out there during all ice conditions, which shelter, heaters, clothing, etc. Look at how much crap we all bring out on the ice with us just to take home a few fillets.

Ice fishing is the challenge on how to get out there in a better way than you did last year. And this is why I wish I was in the ice fishing product business. One step into the St Paul ice fishing show and you realize how much money is being thrown around.
