I use both, sometimes at the same time.

The deeper in the water column I want to fish, the more I want to use live bait.

What kind of live bait could you use for topwater fishing? I keep visualizing tying a little snake food baby mouse to a double frog hook and let that little dude splash around along a weed edge. Can baby mice swim?

Ice time (cold) I always use live. I used to use minnows for crappies a lot more. Now that I am using plastics more I catch fewer non targeted stuff.
