Off Season Ice Rod Storage

Looking for ideas on how to store my ice fishing rods during the off season. What I have been doing is laying them flat in the hard sided rod cases I have and leaving the cases open. all tension taken off of the rods as well, especially the noodle type rods

This has worked great, however it is taking up a lot of space.

I recently mounted some rod racks on the ceiling in the garage for my open water rods. Something like this would work for the ice rods that are graphite, I would I would think it may cause an issue with the noodle rods unless the racks were mounted only 12inches apart from each other

What do other people use to keep ice rods safe and out of the way for of season storage?

I store mine in a heavy cardboard tube that I received several rods in years ago. A PVC tube would also work well. I have a eye hook on the endcap and just hang it from a hook on the wall. The hardside case works well as well. You need to keep it stored someplace anyway.

I leave mine in the hard cases just loosen all the drags and that’s it. I have the left over bobber rods in a soft case hanging somewhere relatively safe. Hard cases go on a shelf up high out of the way.

I either leave mine in the hard rod boxes and loosen the drag, or put them in a vertical rod rack on the wall of the garage. The second way seems to be best for assuring the rods are held perfectly neutral/vertical and also is a great visual for how many I have keeping me from buying more

Do you guys close and latch the hard sided rod cases? I was thinking the foam on the inside would be permanently indented where the reels are if the cases are left closed for 6 months or so.

I put them in a box now up on the shop shelves. Storing them upright with no line or tension on the rod.

I have stored them in otter boxes the old style for a few years as well.
As long as the rod does not have a load it is okay.

I usually store my lighter rods and noodles in a case, but for my homemade lake trout and walleye rods – I lean those up against my wall. They’re all carbon blanks and decently stiff, so it doesn’t hurt them (unlike leaning a bamboo fly rod against a wall lol)

Sidenote: Currently finishing up on a giant Laker setup! I’m pretty pumped, it’s a 48in extra-heavy carbon blank with a 10in grip and Japanese fly guides. I’m probably going to be using 6-8in tubes on it

This is what I use. They are coated with a soft rubber and use friction and gravity to hold the rods in place. Just wish they’d make one for ice fishing that holds more rods. I use their open water racks as well.

Looks like they haven’t released their ice fishing rack yet. He told me he would be releasing it this winter. You can contact them and they will most likely let you purchase them though.

    Here’s mine

It does take the fun out of it. However, I ice fish less now than I ever have in my life. The 20 or so rods I have currently should hold me for some time.

Mahto I have 1 of the piranhas on my garage ceiling. Has to be approximately 15 years old now. Works great.

I store them in the hardshell case with no tension and then the cases in the rafters in the garage.

I have one of those as well as the wall mount ones. They are great and definitely last.
