In most years there will be fish present at the dam and there’s always fish to be had at that time of year on the north end of the lake / head of the lake.
Generally speaking, if we get a cool / cold fall you’ll see more fish up near the dam in October. If the weather is warmer than normal (I know, what is “normal” when talking weather?) you’ll see fewer quality fish at the dam and a stronger bite down towards the lake.
In the fall up at the dam the bite will be on minnow rigs and hair jigs first, then blades come on strong with the preference towards plastics kicking in as temps drop. Again, this is a very general guide.
Down on the lake anglers do well casting crankbaits (#5 and #7 shad raps are my go to baits) to rip rap shorelines. Point No Point is often a favorite location at that time. As temps drop anglers will start to sub in hair jigs and plastics with 3″ and 4″ paddletails proving to be strong producers year after year.
October is a great month for fishing the river. Often times you can catch some really good weather and if you stay open to fishing the lake if the fish aren’t at the dam… you’ll always have a good option to turn to. The best thing you can do is plan your trip now and pay attention to fishing reports in the weeks leading up to your trip.
