All this talk about end of the ice fishing season makes me thankful I’m in Ely! Crappies are schooling up and most lakes have 20″+ of solid ice with a little snow on top. Trout season is coming to a close and it has been good this winter, but now is the time to chase schools of 12-16″ slabs, jumbo perch and big gills! If you’re not ready to throw in the ice fishing towel, you know where to go!

Here’s today’s and likely my season’s last Laker as I will be in the office the next 2 days. I will be going after some stream trout for a few hours before work tomorrow, so hopefully it won’t be my last trout of the ice season. If anyone is planning to come up to Ely for some ice yet, please feel free to contact me for an ice conditions report.

A little early morning fishing before heading in to the office brought this beauty up yesterday just after sunrise. Easily the most beautiful Rainbow I’ve ever caught! I may be playing hooky from work today to fish the final day of the trout season with some pals, we’ll see.
