Just got a wheelhouse last year and will be doing the regular rounds on MN lakes, but I have a lot of friends in central WI. My question is, are there any northern WI lakes that have resorts that plow roads? Preferably north central. I couldn’t come up with anything googling it.

Northern WI, plowed roads?

Not that I can think of off hand. Northern Wisconsin has always kind of catered to snowmobiles way more then ice fishing. I ended up putting a plow on my ATV just so I could plow out a small road just so others could walk out onto the smaller lakes near my family’s place.
I do know that the clubs around Winnebago for and maybe Castlerock, and Petenwell do but that’s about it.

Mind you this was during a tournament and I was checking tip ups off the trail but had to cross from our deep water jigging spot. Couldn’t believe it. The nerve of me, walking across there trail in broad daylight

October 23, 2018 at 8:20 pm #1805432It’s kind of sucks that it is that way, but at the same time there aren’t enough large lakes that can support huge fishing pressure. Plus the resorts make as much if not more with the snowmobiles without the headache of dealing with road passes and plowing constantly. I know some resort owners who go through 1 to 2 transmissions a year due to plowing.
The nice part is, is that there are a lot of untouched lakes up there. If you’re willing to do a little research on the DNR website you can find some gems that may not get another hole drilled all winter.

Not supposed to tell any one those secrets. Just joking. But I wouldn’t rely on the wi dnr charts they are a lot more vague then mn

Yep…exactly what Al says. Having had a cabin in Iron County near Mercer, the culture there was snowmobiling. And some of the best trails in the Midwest through Vilas and Iron County. I was more hyped about where I could take my ZR 600 to 100+ mph on some lake.
That was then…but still is I think. Never found any lake areas that plowed roads for ice fishing…but then I was never looking.
True though, there are almost unlimited untouched lakes in the winter that could be phenomenal. Challenge would be…trudging out through a foot or two of snow.
RegularpaulPosts: 83October 23, 2018 at 10:11 pm #1805470What about the sheer logistics of taking a wheelhouse on a northern WI lake? Having fought horrible slush in Vilas county so many times I’m not sure how jacked I’d be to try to tackle that. But maybe that’s just me and the lakes i’ve fished.
Small aluminum skid house, sure. Wheel house, meh, I think I’d just keep my barstool warm instead
October 24, 2018 at 7:48 am #1805512I have a Cabin in Bayfield County. Nobody maintains ice roads. They get a lot more snow than MN lakes and thin Ice and slush are the norm. Most lakes do not get truck traffic. It’s all snowmobile or Atv
