Pretty sure they are fishing public places just like everyone else. You don’t see people because the crowd is rarely ever on a big fish with numbers bite. You might need to start venturing out on your own bub.

In the past, they Typically closed off lakes during filming. One year they actually closed all accesses to Mille lacs for sweeps week but not too many people were pleased with that. So now the crew puts up “green screens” to super impose the backgrounds to keep regular folks out of the shots…it’s a liability thing.

I assume when they shoot they take footage from certain angles as well.

They also film during the week, which inherently has fewer people. As said before, you can film at different angles and through the magic of editing make it look like a remote location.

They also aren’t part of the herd. Most people will set up where everyone else is, because that must be where the fish are. They need to make a show catching better than just dink panfish, which if you look at popular lakes is where a lot of the people congregate. They move and move and move until they find better fish. They say as much during the show. They are probably one of, if not the most honest fishing shows on tv. They’ll tell you if they didn’t get fish for hours and moved around a ton.

This is super underrated! Makes a massive difference. Not to undermine the huge amount of work they put in, but it also helps that they generally have someone who is ‘on the bite’ before their arrival. Having connections is key, and I would know because I dont have any

I know i’d watch a half hour of james sitting in an ice castle in the middle of shanty town watching football drinking beers and eventually having the small school of 8″ crappies swim under him

They use green screens to make it look like they are ice fishing, in reality they are above the fish tanks at Cabelas in Owatonna

I also want to add. The intro says going places others don’t. Going harder and pushing deeper then most do.
Do tell the lady. She might have a new crush, and start ice fishing

I’ve been fishing on a lake with no public Access. The first couple of times it was easy. Tonight we couldn’t get a meal.

Ding ding. Most of the work finding the fish is done over the phone.

Most if not all their videos you can see others fishing in the background. Sometimes quite a few.

Maybe they’re just social distancing responsibly….. toast

    Sorry, just found this.

We never fish private bodies of water. Ever. We do face all the challenges faced by other anglers. We just deal with them differently than most. Some will see a crowd of anglers and try to join in. We head to the other side of the lake. And if we do have a few people around us we have trained our camera operators to not show them to protect their privacy.

My question to you is why would you fish near other people when you have endless options to not do so?

Start looking at pictures of big fish, frequently you will not only not see other fisherman you will also not see houses on the shore-does not mean the lake is private could mean they have worked to find a spot off the beaten path.

It seems to me if they are fishing a major body of water they always say where they are fishing. If they are fishing a small lake they say a general area but never name the lake, which is the responsible thing to do. If they would name one of those small ND perch sloughs or MN crappie lakes on TV that thing would get obliterated in short order. You have to put in the work to find those things and that’s the way it should be.

You’re exactly correct bfishin, that happened to my favorite honey-hole, word got out of descent sized panfish and that was it… now I have to do the work to find a new lake…

Not to split hairs here but I thought your Nebraska panfish video from last year was on a private body of water?

I got out on a public access and only one other crew out there. I felt like I was on an ido episode once I found them. Nicest crappies of the year for me ! It pays to go where nobody else is.
