Alaska came to mind right away for me as well, or some spot in Canada with new “Frontiers”. Huge fan of literature with the settlers coming to the Americas and Canada, books of adventure and toil. And then pondering on these pieces I remembered oh FU#$ that! That is a tough life man! Sure it has it’s wonderful moments but the rest are filled with blood and sweat.
Brainerd sounds good at this point in my life. Maybe in my younger years those other areas would work, but for now put me in proximity to some good restaurants and bars, centrally located to some of the best fishing in the Midwest and call er good.
June 16, 2016 at 11:07 pm #1624944I would go for Duluth/Superior area, close enough to Canada to do quick weekend trips but still in close enough to weekend trips south to visit family
June 17, 2016 at 5:32 am #1624952Somewhere here, but out more in the country with some land and within 30 minutes of the ocean.
Or perhaps on a boat/houseboat.
June 17, 2016 at 8:15 am #1624968I’d like to own an island in Voyagers National Park with log home, out buildings, and a large drive in boathouse.
And I’ll second pugs mention of a houseboat as well.

June 17, 2016 at 9:01 am #1624981upstate NY. Absolutely gorgeous scenery and plenty of outdoor opportunities with mountains and fishing and hunting plus you are a few hours drive from NYC where you can find every opportunity and culture a big city has to offer.
June 17, 2016 at 9:05 am #1624982…and culture a big city has to offer.
That’s what I am trying to avoid. I’d be more than happy to move to somewhere more old Florida, but my wife prefers easy access to groceries and stores in the burbs.
June 17, 2016 at 9:21 am #1624987Northern MN, BT’s idea on Rainy Lake would definitely work, otherwise Bemidji or Duluth areas. Outside of MN Red Lodge, MT, Vancouver or Alaska. With all the extra $$ I’d have I would also winter in AZ, in the Phoenix burbs not far from Canyon Lake.
June 17, 2016 at 9:37 am #1624990Outside of Red Wing MN, Mississippi River, Wisconsin Back Channel. With a wintering home on the Trinity River near Dallas Tx.
With a case of Hamm’s.
June 17, 2016 at 9:40 am #1624991Montana or Wyoming in the summer, Holbox Island, Yucatan, Mexico in the winter. I love the west, but wouldn’t want to winter there. Holbox is flats fishing heaven.
But since I am married, and to a woman who just happens to have citizenship in 3 countries, I’m going to stick with Plan A and spend long stretches of time in New Zealand after retirement. We may even buy a small house down there.
NZL just may be the last paradise left on Earth as far as I’m concerned. Almost every river has trout, there is public access to all rivers, there is terrific hunting, and there are basically no people.
I cannot describe the weirdness of it. Walking mile after mile after mile of PERFECT trout water. All the while, my North American sense says there just HAS to be somebody fishing around the next bend. Nope. Nor the next. Nor the next. I fished for 2 days before I met another angler on the Mataura River. Another American, as it happened.

June 17, 2016 at 9:46 am #1624993I would pick somewhere between Baudette and International Falls along the Rainy River. Gotta have a big shop for boats, ATV’s and Snowmobiles. 2 hours from the Soo Line North trail and 2 hours from Souix Narrows, Ontario. You are still close enough to 2 big cities for all needed amenities. Great ATV and snowmobile opportunities and some of the best Walleye, Sturgeon and Lake Trout fishing within miles of your front door.
June 17, 2016 at 9:54 am #1624997And FL has some of the hottest women…
Sure do! We call them tourists!
June 17, 2016 at 9:54 am #1624998I would also accept the outskirts of Pierre, SD on Oahe. You have an awesome walleye and Salmon fishing in your backyard. There is also great Prairie dog and deer hunting right around you. You are just under 3 hours away from the Black Hills for some of the best ATV riding the midwest has to offer.

June 17, 2016 at 11:19 am #1625016Sturgeon Bay. Beautiful country. So much opportunity to catch so many different species of fish. Plus the door county chowder and bloodys at Waterfront Mary’s are the best I’ve ever had.
I guess good food, drink and great fishing are the only things I want in this imaginary scenario, or in my real life. Hmm…I wonder if I can work remotely from the other side of Wisconsin…

All this sounds perfect to me – MT was going to be my reply and while I’ve never heard of Holbox before, looking at pictures makes it seem like my kind of place.
Speaking of the south island, I have a cousin that lives near Dunedin NZ and I’ve made it a life mission to take 2 weeks to visit her one day.

Of course you are referring to puss bellies, bad teeth, tats that cover most of the body and piercings where the tats are not found along with pink or purple hair.
Live in the country near water and woods…..go to the Mall of America for “culture”.
June 19, 2016 at 1:32 pm #1625258I’m with Bigstorm, Duluth/ Superior area. Big Lake right there. Cheq Bay less then an hour, lot’s of Steelhead in the area.
