No-Roll vs. Pyramid vs. Bank Sinkers for Sturgeon

This is maybe on old topic but I was curious if anyone has a preference between the three when fishing for sturgeon.

I have always used a no-roll sinker and know that most people do. I recently read somewhere that mentioned some use bank sinkers. It also mentioned that when fishing in current and anchoring out in the river it isn’t necessary to use the no rolls and that those are more useful when fishing from shore. The argument against no-rolls is the chance for it to helicopter on the way down, the design catches more current causing a need to use a heavier weight than compared to a bank sinker in the same conditions, two contact points with your line compared to one with a bank or pyramid sinker, and since you are in theory using less weight comparatively speaking, there is less of chance for the weight to pull your leader and bait into a soft silt bottom which is never good.

Obviously, some of the most successful sturgeon angles I know use the no-roll so maybe it’s a Ford vs. Chevy debate but thought it was interesting nontheless.

I don’t know if the style matters so much to be honest.. One thing that I have started using are sinker slides. Way better on the braid and help from the twist up.
I will try to attach a picture. They sell them pretty cheap on Amazon. Search fishing sinker slides and there are a few brands to pick from.

I’ve used both the no roll and weights that you can use with the sinker slides. I prefer the slides because I don’t have to leave the sinkers on at the end of the day.

I use the least amount of weight to maintain bottom contact and a tight line. I want a small amount of debris to lift my bait off the bottom.

I don’t get too particular with sinker design, other than I really don’t like lead sliding on braided line.

The only sinker slide I use is a snap swivel. I attach a small zip tie to my sinkers so the swivel can attach to the tie, and the tie is the weakest link.

Some good info for those excited about rainy

I like pyramids, but I can’t say exactly why I prefer them.

I think if you are fishing downstream, it shouldn’t matter which weight you use. On the other hand, if you are fishing across the current, the no roll would actually work better as it won’t ‘roll’…thus the name.

with reference to the sinker slides. I always use a three way swivel with a snap attached to one of the eyes. Hook the sinker…any sinker that has an eye…to the three way. It is stationary and yes a fish will feel the weight but I don’t believe a sturgeon, catfish or most other fish will even care about that. I simply do not want anything sliding on my line.
