No more expired flares!

I received an email today that was quite timely as my signal flares will expire early next year.
“YES! The Sirius SOS Distress Light is the first (and as of September, 2015, the only) LED visual distress signal device accepted to completely replace pyrotechnic flares for nighttime use.”
Compared to the repeated cost of flares every few years, I am glad to have an alternative.

When I replaced my flares the first time, I figured I should acquaint myself with them and light them off. Too damp and wouldn’t light.

So…the question of the day. Are they USCG approved for day and night use or just night use?

I’m always confused about my flare gun…twisted inside really..because in the event of a true boating emergency when I need the coast guard, I don’t know which of my passengers I’m supposed to shoot with it. Or how that even helps my situation.

If Deb showed up in my boat,,,,,,,, it would not be the flare gun going off.

    They say:

“Fulfills all Coast Guard requirements (46 CFR 175.130) for marine distress signals when combined with our included Distress Flag.”

As I read the CFR, the light meets the night requirement, and the included flag meets the day requirement, so your combination would meet the day and night requirement.

    Thanks Ralph,

    I’m sticking with my $25. day/night flares.
    1) They last 3 years. For $75. I’ll have 12 years worth and that will put me in a wheelchair instead of a boat.
    2) I like the idea of something that can float away from the boat to have a better chance at being seen.
    3) Bright flares are easier to see in the daylight as well.
    4) I don’t know anyone that flares have ever aided “on the river”.

But I can see some advantages to the LED’s.

    or anywhere else around here.
I’ve had the misfortune of breaking down twice while on the water. 1. Lake Mendota. Power head blew on a Mariner 40 mag and I was needing to cross the entire lake with a dieing trolling motor. Shot flares off and had people waiving at me. Shot my last flare directly at a passing boat. When the guy came over to kick my azz, it was only then that he realized I was in need of help. 2nd was on lake MI. Motor issue and i was coming in amongst the ice pack with my trolling motor. Waived my daytime distress flag and EVERY boat passing by had people waiving and continuing on by. Not one of them stopped to see what was wrong or lend a hand. Wish more boaters were educated in safety and signaling. Pretty bad when you need to launch a flare directly at someone to get their attention
