Night Bite

I have never fished the croix at night for eyes. I have caught a couple by accident after dark fishing other species. Is there a decent night bite out there? I can only get out Saturday afternoon/evening and with the weather coming i assumes it is going to busy out there until dark.

In my opinion, no. In all the years I have fished it they always shut down end of day well before dark and dont start until well after light. However I have only fished after dark twice so I cant be certain what happens all night long.

Agree with suzuki. Bite consistently dies before dark. Never done well at night. Even hitting the water at midnight on opener. Nothing until light out. Talking St Croix from Stillwater south. Not sure about the upper end where the water is typically shallow.

Have you guys tried changing location, like following the fish shallower? Just cause the fish stop biting where you are doesn’t always mean they aren’t feeding somewhere.

Yes. This is an opinion formed over a 10 year period fishing the Croix 2-3 times a week opener to October. (During the 90’s – early 2000’s. Don’t fish there much anymore.) But again, just an opinion. I compare it to waters like LOW, Rainey where the water is coffee color stained. Can you get a fish at night? Sure. Is there a decent night bite? No.

    Jon,

How do you think the walleye night bite on the St. Croix compares to the night bite on Pool 2? It seems like in the summer on Pool 2 or 3, the bite dies about dark for me using the techniques I am in the locations I’m fishing which is primarily wing dams. Although I have to admit I haven’t really tried the night bite much on P2 or P3 after dark in the summer like I have in the fall or winter. But come October or especially into November and December, the night bite on Pool 2 can be much better, or at least as good, as the day bite. And water clarity is not yet very good in November on Pool 2. What makes the night bite better in the fall than the summer. Obviously the water temperature is cooler but the clarity can be similar.

There is a decent night bite on P2 in the summer if you put the time in.
