So I took the family to Turtle Lake (north of Grand Rapids) for the first time. Never had my boat that far north before, or fished soft water in that area before. Mostly stick around Pepin and try my “luck” on the sheepies while hunting the eyes. Never found the walleye on Turtle, but holy cow are there tons of big bass on that lake. I’m not a bass guy, but must admit…they were darn fun to catch. Even found a few crappie. Took me awhile to get used to water that was so clear, though! Certainly not like the river!

Cool! Bass are addicting. And quite tasty once in a while.

The bass fishing atound grand rapids is great. I think u can go to most lakes up there and run into 3-5 pounders. To quote rodney dangerfield, up there they get no respect i tell ya. Walleye is king.

On a side note, good luck finding eyes up there without a guide. The clear lakes (poke, deer, trout) can be tough especially during the day. I’ve been going up there for years and regularly get skunked tryingto find the walleyes.

Its a process… many diehard walleye and muskie fisherman have made the conversion to smallmouth. Both Al Lindner (long-time known for being a walleye fisherman) and Joe Bucher (Hall of Fame muskie angler) have admitted that smallmouth are their favorite species to catch…

Sshhh, don’t let the word out and let walleye be king here in Minnesota so there are plenty of 3-5 pound bronze backs left for the rest of us… !

You ain’t kidding about finding eyes in those clear lakes, Andy. I threw everything at em and was skunked. Fortunately the bass were more than willing to cooperate.
