I just received a cool new ice rod and wanted to let other know my thoughts on it. It is the Clam outdoors Scepter Stick. For the last few years I have used and love the clam Ice team Matt Johnson Panfish rod with a spring bobber. This rod has really increased the # of panfish I catch. Until you use a rod with a light spring bobber you will not believe the # of bites you are missing. After losing my favorite rod late last ice season ( Dumb mistake ) I was in need of replacing it. In the process of ordering a new one from clam I ran across a new rod they have also with a spring bobber called the Scepter. I just received my rod order yesterday. As happy as I was to have a new Matt Johnson rod, I was really impressed with the Scepter stick. I ordered the Light action model. To be honest the rod action and the spring bobber itself were both a little stiffer than I had hoped. They also offer the rod in a UL with a UL spring bobber. I was a little concerned that the UL may be a little Light in both action and spring bobber so I went with the light action. I think the light action will be great with slender spoons and the small rippin rap. I just ordered another Scepter stick in the UL model. These rods have a price of 39.99. I think the quality of the rod at that pricepoint is Excellent. As a matter of fact I think it is as nice as the higher priced Matt Johnson ice team rod ( 69.99 ) which I had thought was a excellent rod for the price. The spring bobbers on these rods are different than a few of the other spring bobber rods I’ve tried and looked at. They return to the same shape over and over – Even after keeping them doubled over from one trip to the next and even after a whole off season. The rod also seems to have a great Back bone ( in the light model anyway ) and a interesting reel seat. If you are looking for what Id call a mid priced panfish rod I’d give the Scepter Rod a try – I think you will really like it.
