Ma and I went to one of our larger parks and walked today. About 50 feet away from the parking lot what should I come across growing right out of a stump back in the woods, but a nice hen of the woods mushroom. This sucker is nice. Its fresh and about 16″ across and thick.

Its soaking now and will be cut up into leaves for the fry pan and tonight’s dinner. What’s left over or not sauted will see the freezer.

I see those all the time in my hunting plot in the cities…never been a mushroom fan…I hear it’s darn tasty, however!

After cleaning and separating into leaves I ended up with three bags of about 2 pounds each. We ate one bag for dinner and its great. Sauted in butter and just a couple thin slivers of red onion…dash of salt. Too good.

Like mine with scrambled eggs. Good stuff. Had 4 pop up in the back yard this year.

I’ll bet they are good in scrambled eggs Mike. I’d take it a step further and crumble some browned sausage into the mix too.

I grow Shitaki mushrooms and they are about like eating steak. The hens are right on the Shitaki’s heels. waytogo on the Hen comment Gary.
