Wifey would like to go fishing with me again and while it’s been some time (30 yrs maybe) for her I would like to get her on to any bite to keep her excited and entertained.. Looking for suggestions on what I could/should (smallies, northerns or Wally’s) target next yr to make that a win? Like I may have said before, I don’t know a thing about ML beyond what I’m learning here. I’m thinking a slip bobber approach would be the place to start. Simple, low key and visual indications of bites..

    Any and all suggestions welcome.

    Thanks

If it was me, I would try a smaller lake with some nice pan fish and/or bass. Something a little easier than Mille Lacs, where you might have the wind/weather blow your outing.

    Thought of a launch?

Easy fishing, sit back and relax, no pressure on u as captain to get on fish, have a drink or two, some snacks, talk with other folks.

Went both openers last couple years and were good times. Kiddo enjoyed it thoroughly. Even got the northern lights

Another idea could be pulling cranks. Cover a lot of water and its not super difficult on mille lacs. As others said the wind can be tough but I am guessing you could run up there on the right/low wind pretty easily.

Mille Lacs can be good all season, but in my mind the best way to catch numbers of Walleyes is fishing the sundown bite the first few weeks of the season. A good one two punch is a bobber and a leech on one line and pitching a jig/minnow with the other. Adjust if the fish show a preference.

Launch is a good idea. Otherwise pick a nice evening in May or early June. Anchor up and watch the lighted bobbers go down as the sun goes down. Should catch walleye and maybe a nice smallie.

I’m not sure if your dead set on Mille Lacs or not but Red Lake in May and early June can be a great way to get some confidence in any technique you want. It’s pretty much a for sure thing you will catch fish there any way you want that time of year and if you just want to sit back and relax just tow some cranks around. Something else to think about anyways.
