Since the photo is now back to normal I am guessing Redfish.

    Winna, winna chicken dinna!

We’re headed to Louisiana to fish redfish with Ben Brettingen. For those with a good memory you’ll recall Ben used to work for IDO back in the day. We went through that miserable winter 5-6 years ago and Ben was suddenly motivated to move to a warmer climate!

Shoot me a PM with your mailing address and I’ll get a hat headed your way. What color? Black or grey?

Nice! There was a segment on chasing Bull Reds around New Orleans on “Fish My City” on the National Geographic Channel. Ike is not for everybody but the show was fun.

    Sweet,
I was hoping to wake up this AM with a powerball winner, but I’ll gladly take the hat.

Congrats,to the yet unnamed Powerball winner from New Berlin Sconnie and a couple million to a Minnie Resident.

For those of you wondering about Redfish, I could say “Google it” but I won’t. They are also called Red Drum in some parts of the gulf coast.
They are a saltwater species of Drum that are a reddish-golden color and have a characteristic spot (or spots) at the tail. They can be found all along the Gulf Coast, mostly in the saltwater marshes of Texas and Louisiana. The big ones are often called “Bulls”. Not sure where it came from, but I do know that reeling them in is like trying to pull in a bull with a fishing rod.
They typically eat small shrimp and crabs and can often be found “tailing” in shallow water during low tides. Their mouths are quite bony in order to crush up those crustaceans so sharp hooks are a necessity.
Redfish are also notorious for long drag burns, so be careful if you are using braid (I have a great scar on my right index finger from a cut I got while grabbing the line in an attempt to haul a smaller red into my kayak).
Redfish are often classified by length rather than weight. A good redfish is going to be in the 20-25″ inch range. A “Bull” will be in the 30+ inch range with some going 35+ inches. The smaller ones range in the 15″ area and are commonly referred to as “rats”.
All in all, they are a great fighting fish and super good on the table.
