    Hey guys –

I have a question regarding using a Marcum to figure out bottom content. Obviously I understand a strong red return means it’s a hard bottom ie rock something along those lines. What I am hoping to do is be able to better understand what the bottom is I am fishing ie rock pile, soft bottom mud flat, find out of there are weeds and where the weed line is, find a hard bottom soft bottom transition things like that. Anyone know of any good resources to point me in the right direction or can fill me in based on your own personal experience?

    Thanks,
    Mike

Best advice I can tell you is to put a weight on your line and pound the bottom to feel the composition compared to the thickness and color of the return you are getting on your graph.

Mark’s right on. You need to get comfortable and familiar with the graph settings you’re using, then compare that with what you’re finding. I think another great way to figure this out is to drop a camera for instant visual confirmation.
