Curious where a guy would start to plan for a DIY LOTW trip with a wheelhouse–access-where to go etc….seems overwhelming. Lots of info on the web but it seems to be resorts etc and rental houses. I appreciate any insight

I would start with a trip to red lake first. You can pretty much catch fish anywhere. They will have ice first. Smaller lake if you do have any issues you won’t be so far out.

On Lotw get a road pass from one of the resorts. Snow depth will depend on how far off the road you can get

When you go to LOTW talk with the guys who take care of the road. Make an offering that will help there bottom line. Negotiate a plowed section off the road for yourself. Any other information you can squeeze from them is on you.

It’s pretty simple. Stop at Adrian’s Resort or Cyrus Resort further to the west or others, pay their fee and they’ll give you a map showing you the layout of their ice road and where to go. Drive onto the ice at their access areas and follow the roads out to the lake.
The roads are well marked for the most part and the signs will correspond to the maps they give you. You won’t necessarily get a plowed section of the road for yourself, but you’ll get a plowed spot where you park your house if you need it or if the snow isn’t deep, just drive off of their road and park anywhere. You’ll quickly see how it all works once you get on the lake.
It may seem overwhelming of you haven’t done it before but there’s actually nothing to it. the resorts that maintain the roads are all very good.
Drive slow while while on the ice and you’ll be fine.

I actually suggest first timers go to LOTW’s. It’s a great place to learn. Very simple. It’s basically like camping. Pre plowed chutes of of main road. Just back in and set down. It’s safer and easier than do it yourself on even a local lake. I highly recommend Zippel Bay. IMHO they are the best on the lake.

Also by going through a resort you can get a tow or yanked out enough to get going again if necessary. Wind and snow can hide roads pretty quickly.

If you buy bait at Adrian’s they usually give up some decent tips on where to go to find fish.
