New Weber or 2000 vintage one in great shape?

My father in law will give me his 20 year old grill that has always been covered and is in great shape. My wife would rather ‘give’ me a brand new grill. Are the older ones better or are the new ones better?

Assuming we are talking about gas grills….The thing about Weber is they last forever AND you can get parts for them when needed. Burners and the vaporizer bars are wear parts on every grill, but on Weber they last longer and parts are easy to find.

I’d take a free used one any day.

Gas, 3 burner. Don’t the new ones have some new useful features? Do the older ones have more stainless? (btw thanks grouse)

Take the used one and have your wife get you a smoker…or a new g loomis and a reel.

I would take the used gasser and see if you can trade it for a weber kettle charcoal. Then as others mentioned have your wife buy you a smoker

I’d take the free one long as the cabinet and housings are good, and it has cast iron grates. Neighbors a chef, sold me on cast iron grille grates.

I’d take the used one. If it don’t have them already, put SS flavor bars & SS grates in it. Will last forever.

you should take the free gas grill and have your gal get you a weber kettle. food off a charcoal grill just tastes so much better. you can do so many things with a kettle like smoking too. it is a fun thing to play with when you have time.
just remember that a 20 year old grill will probably need new grates, burners and it may be a challenge to find parts?

My 20+ year old Weber gas still works great. Clean the burners each year. Took each burner valve apart a few years ago, cleaned and regreased. Probably should replace the flavorizer bars and the igniter this year. Stainless steel is the way to go.

Got a “free” Weber 3 yrs ago. THe kind on wheels with the side table ( i think it’s called a Performer) . Takes a small propane tank or I hook up my big tank and turns the flame on to heat the charcoal. It was “broken” ( needed a new igniter) hosed and scrubbed it – looks like new – works GREAT! Came with all the Weber brand tools and charcoal holder/oven thingie to lite the charcoal in. Love charcoal over gas. Sure, takes a little more planning and yes, charcoal but I don’t mind. I grill 2-3 week all year long. Wife told me to buy a new gas one but said, “want and need”: are two different things.
    My two cents

Used for sure. Just ordered new burners for my 20+ year old Genesis Silver C, $75 and it will be good as new.

Many of the grills that are thrown out need a few parts. I’d go with the old one that’s in great shape and save the $$$ for something else.

I know I am frugal, but I bought a “used and ABUSED” Propane Weber Summit 670 off of Craigslist for $300 in the Minneapolis area. Loaded it into my truck and hauled it home to Crosslake. My wife was appalled at what I spent $300 on. After 40 hours of cleaning and scrubbing with oven cleaner, zep 505, ammonia water, dawn, wire brushes, scotch brites, and $300 of new parts. For the $300 I also converted it to Natural Gas.

Here is what I have, $3200 Summit. Which is going to prep a a rotisserie pork roast for Easter dinner…

I thought your price on a new 670 might be a little light. You did even better than you thought.

SRP on a 670 is $3600 plus assembly. With tax almost 4 grand out the door. Nice job!

Haha nice work! It seems minimal in comparison, but I bought a used and abused Weber Genesis Silver 2 burner for $80 online, bought $100 worth of GrillGrates and have basically a new and improved grill (heats to a higher temp, more cooking options, better searing etc.). They are adonized aluminum, and awesome!

I replaced our old Weber Genesis 3-burner and still regret it. The old ones made the name famous. The new ones are just cashing in on the name.
In a nutshell our new one(s) are built slighter and dont generate or hold near the heat so we had to learn how to grill again with them. If its cool out and there is any breeze, forget the perfect steak or burger. The old one worked the same winter or summer.

On a related note, does anyone know how to hot-rod the newer Webers? I cant find anything online. surely there is a gas orifice that can be enlarged to give these things more flame????

Thanks for all the input, we are going to try to haul the thing back from NB-first the wife has to load all her stuff incluing a dresser. I have a Weber kettle but like the gas when I’m feeling lazy (so most of the time) When I want a really good burger I use the kettle with lump charcoal.
