Hello, this year I’d like to get into trolling for trout and salmon on MN north shore. I’d like to first do it without downriggers and leadcore and all other traditional fishing equipment and do more shallow water fishing at first. Anyone know what time of year the fish are in more shallow water?

From the first time you can get a boat it until about the end of June most fish will be on the surface. If you have any lead core setups with 10 colors, you can add snap weight to get down deeper. 80-100 if needed. Dipsys will get you down 80-100 as well. I fished Superior for 5 years with good success before ever buying a downrigger.

In the spring fishing pink or orange x-raps right on the surface will get some cohos.

Can’t speak to the timing up there, but by me (SE Wisconsin) we can get by without lead core early in the season for cohos, even out in deep water. The coho rigs with maybe a 1 oz snap weight rules. Event aully a couple colors of lead will play in, but even then 3 colors seems to get it done, with just as many fish on the surface yet anyway.
