47# pike. You are going to need a bigger rod. Make sure to post a photo is you get some decent ones.

    Very cool!

Well there are a lot of great guys on the site with a wealth of knowledge about pike.

I’m riding in the car right now so I’m not prepared to write a novel on my phone to lay it all out on the line for you, but tonight I’ll be around my computer and I’ll give you the scoop on what I know about pikin’

I’m excited to hear about some of your pike techniques out there!

Glad you found it to our little corner of the Internet!, great to have you.

I target pike more than any other species Sounds like they run very big at your favorite fishing hole.

My favorite bait is the “X-Rap series” of lures by Rapala. In early spring pre – post spawn conditions I use a “4 inch” regular X-rap” that is closest in color to that of the natural bait. As the water warms I uses a “5.5 inch saltwater X-Rap” again trying to match the color of the lure to the lakes bait. I also use “Phantom curly tails” and “Spring Bull Dawgs” which you can get from the “Musky Shop”, look on line. I’m trying some new lures myself so try to experiment. A minnow or whatever bait is used in Scotland and Jig might be a good bait as well.

The lures I use run up to ~ 2.5 oz. You will need a rod that handles this weight. A heavy but not to heavy rod is what I use, rated (1 to 2) oz., this can handle a bait up to ~ 3 oz. Bait being the weight of the lure. If the lure is to heavy it won’t combine right with your rod and could even break the rod if the lures to heavy. Perhaps someone the forum would guide you towards heavier rods but since I have my best luck on the X-Rap series of Rapala’s I don’t go too heavy.

I hope this helps and good luck with the toothy critters.

Watch this video for info on how to you the X-rap. The difference is as the water approaches 60 to 65 degrees twitch – jerk it more vigorously than shown in the video, giving it 3 to 5 vigorous jerks. If the water is cooler 40 to 45 degrees F go even a bit slower than what is shown. The technique is often deadly for pike, they often bite on the pause.

It’s hard to go wrong with a few select lures! Anywhere there are weeds, you’ll likely see me throwing a big bent arm spinnerbait, especially fishing for giant pike. Blue Fox’s Superbou, along with the classic M&G work great. It works well through any type of weeds and it’s a really easy bait to fish. I do however like to change speeds with the bait as to trigger strikes. We destroyed pike on them earlier this summer in weeds!

The next go to bait for casting is a Blue Fox #6 Vibrax in Silver. I like it because it is extremely versatile, as it can be worked deep, shallow or through weeds.

I’ve seen first hand what a good jerkbait can do for pike. Here is an episode James did on fishing for pike with X-Raps, pretty cool stuff!

The new BX Jointed Minnow from Rapala has been a pretty dang good bait too, especially in clear and cold water. The best colors have been Blue back herring and gold shiner, just matching the forage in your lake.

In terms of trolling, you can’t go wrong with working the weedlines with spoon plugs. They look extremely crude, but the thing is just a flat out fish catching machine! It runs about 14 feet at 3.5 mph. Perfect for working a lot of the weed edges we have around us. The best colors for me have been nickel, and white/red head in the 100 and 700 series. Like I said before, a flat out fish catching bait if you’re looking to troll.

I’ve also had fairly good luck trolling red eye wiggler spoons, either straight behind the boat or on planar boards in the 1 oz size. Just trolling fast enough to keep it above the weeds.

Plastics work fairly well. Dunwright makes some BA looking lures that catch fish, along with Muskie Innovations Bulldawgs in the regular size.

Those are the main techniques I fish, but there are a number of specialty bites you can catch pike on around here. What do you primarily fish with over the pond from us?

    Can’t beat the classics.

Another good way to catch pike is to fish for anything else. Preferably without a leader. You’ll catch more pike fishing for sunfish, walleyes, bass, muskies, etc than you care to count.

I’m the opposite I catch LMbass, SMbass and the occasional Walleye by accident while targeting pike and tiger-muskys. Hammer handles are scarce.
